Sign language uses many different hand shapes and each finger plays an important role. One interesting discovery is that the middle finger is one of the major hand shapes used to form many signs.
At Active Sign Language Training center, our research and teaching experience show that the middle finger can be used to form more than 100 different signs.
For example, with the middle finger you can sign numbers and words such as 8, 18, 80, 25, hate, wait, perfect, and many more.
This shows how one hand shape can communicate many meanings in sign language.

Watch some of the videos from our instructors to see how these signs are formed and used in real communication.

Story: Deaf Mom and Police

A Deaf mother in the United States named Andrea “Dre” Hollingsworth was driving with her twin daughters.

Police stopped her car.

The police officer shouted commands, but Andrea is Deaf. She could not hear the officer.

Andrea tried to show the officer that she is Deaf. She pointed to her ears and tried to use signs.

But the officer did not understand.

The officer pulled Andrea out of the car and pushed her to the ground in front of her children. Her daughters were scared.

The officer even asked the children to help interpret.

Andrea was handcuffed. But later, the police did not charge her with any crime.

Andrea decided to take the case to court. She said the police did not respect the rights of Deaf people under the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act).

The city later agreed to pay $1.2 million to settle the case.

Now the police department must also train officers every year about Deaf people and communication.

Important message:
Deaf people and hearing people are equal. Police and society must learn how to communicate with Deaf people with respect.
