The Digestive System (DS)

▪This system refers to a group of organs working together to convert food into energy and basic nutrients to feed the entire body.💪🏽
▪Food passes through a long tube inside the body known as the "alimentary canal" or the "gastrointestinal tract".↪↩
▪The alimentary canal is made up of the oral cavity, pharynx, oesophagus, stomach, small intestines and large intestines.👄
▪In addition to the alimentary canal are some important organs that help your body to digest the food : teeth, tongue, salivary glands, liver, gallbladder and pancreas.👅
▪Six major functions which take place in the DS include
1.Ingestion(taking in) of food😋
2.Secretion of fluids and digestive enzymes💦
3.Mixing and movement of food through the body🔄

KIDNEY
(Part 2)

▪The kidney is part of a bigger family called the "urinary tract"👨‍👩‍👧‍👧
▪The urinary tract begins with the "kidney" then a tube called "ureter" which connects the kidney to the "bladder",then finally another tube called "urethra"which connects the bladder to outside our body.➡
▪Kidney stones refer to hard deposits made of up minerals and salts that form inside your kidneys.💎
▪Often, stones form when urine becomes concentrated allowing minerals to crystallize and stick together. ⛓

Signs and Symptoms

▪A kidney stone may not cause symptoms until it moves around within your kidney or passes into your ureter.😐
▪You may then experience the ff:
🔸Intense pain in your side or back which may radiate to your lower abdomen and groin 😫
🔸Nausea and vomiting🤮
🔸Bloody urine💉... etc

Diagnosis

Your doctor will visualise these stones using imaging techniques such as x-rays,etc and also some blood and urine tests.👨🏽‍⚕

Treatment

▪Most kidneys stones will pass on their own. You may only have to take painkillers for the pain as they pass.💊
▪For bigger stones which do not pass on their own, they will require the use of sound waves to break them up or surgery to remove them.🔊

SICKLE CELL DISEASE
(Part 2)

How Is SCDx inherited?

▪Every individual has two groups of hemoglobin(the oxygen carrying substance in our blood).👩🏻‍⚕
▪One group is inherited from the mother and the other from the father.The two come together to form a set.
▪The group may be one of the following:A,S,C,etc
🔸So A from mum and A from dad gives "AA".
🔸A from mum and S from dad gives "AS" and vice versa.
🔸S from mum and S from dad gives "SS".
▪A person with AS is a sickle cell carrier or has the sickle cell trait.They almost never get crisis.
▪People with SS or SC or any combination with S (other than AS) have Sickle Cell Disease.
▪This is why pre-marriage testing to know your partner's sickling status is very important .👰🏽🤵🏽

Malaria Susceptibility

▪Sickle cell carriers(AS) are less likely to get malaria than normal individuals with AA.😃
▪However sickle cell patients easily get malaria compared to people with AA and it tends to be more severe.😳

Is SCDx Curable?
Yes, using Bone Marrow transplant.But it is rarely done because of some technical difficulties.👨🏻‍🔬

Life Expectancy For SCDx

SCDx patients can grow up to any age once they are well taken care of. However some do not survive into adulthood.👴🏼

SICKLE CELL DISEASE
(Part 1)

▪It is a genetic condition where an individual has a problem with his/her red blood cells(the cells that carry blood around the body).👨🏽‍⚕
▪This happens as a result of abnormal hemoglobin in these cells.👩🏻‍⚕
▪Hemoglobin is the pigment in red blood cells that gives blood its red color.🛑
▪SCD is common is people of African origin🌍
▪It affects about 1:700 Africans each year.📈
▪It is not from bad luck or a curse or evil spirits.👹

▪SCD patients easily fall ill. They get into a serious condition called *CRISIS* ,where they develop a number of severe symptoms simultaneously such as:
•Headache 😰
•Joint pains 😩
•Chest pain 😖
•Abdominal pain😭
•Difficult in breathing 😤
•Yellowish coloration of their eyes(Jaundice)🧐
•Their urine becomes dark like coca cola🍷

Some factors that bring about the crisis include:

•Infection🤢
•Extremes of weather(cold or hot) 🌦
•Strong emotions😡
•Dust and other allergies 🤧
•Dehydration(not drinking much or not having enough water in the body) 💦
•Stress😵
•Pain😫

Helpful Remedies for SCD patients:
