At Takoradi Technical Institute, the change didn't start with a new building or a big machine.
It started with people.
On any given morning now, you'll see them - members of the Green Committee and the student-led Ecowarriors Green Club - checking the segregation bins, turning the compost, tending to the young trees they planted, reminding a colleague where plastic really goes.
This is what happens when sustainability stops being a project and starts becoming a practice.
Together with GIZ's Pact for Skills: Support to the Transformation of the TVET System in Ghana, we held hands-on, competency-based training for TTI's green champions. Not theory on a blackboard, but skills for real life:
We learned how to segregate and manage waste properly. How to compost the advanced way. How to give plastic a second life through recycling and upcycling, and how to tackle textile waste. How to garden, plant and protect trees, how to conserve every drop of water, and most importantly - how to speak up and teach others.
And the campus is already telling the story.
Walk through TTI today and you'll feel it. Staff, students and even visitors are practicing what they learned. Waste is reduced. Water is managed better. Energy is used more wisely. The compound is cleaner, healthier, greener.
Management and staff have gone a step further - they have now integrated green criteria into the school's curricula. Green is no longer an extra activity, it's part of learning.
The Ecowarriors and the Green Committee are living proof of one simple truth: When you invest in skills and structure - backed by a manual and a constitution - you don't just create awareness, you create leaders who sustain change.
This is what green TVET looks like.
This is skills for the future.
This initiative is under the Pact for Skills: Support to the Transformation of the TVET System in Ghana" project, funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the European Union, implemented by CorpNation Foundation and GIZ Ghana in partnership with the Ministry of Education, CTVET and TVET Service.
