Nationwide Campaign Against Examination Malpractice in Bono Region
Date: Thursday, 30th April, 2026
Time: 10:00 AM
Venue:SUSEC ICT Centre
Education without integrity loses its value — a strong message echoed at the Nationwide Campaign Against Examination Malpractice held at the SUSEC ICT Centre in the Bono Region.
The campaign, led by Mr. Gabriel Antwi, Regional Director of Education, Bono, brought together key stakeholders to confront a growing threat to Ghana’s education system and national development.
🚫 Examination Malpractice: A National Threat
Examination malpractice is a cancer eating away at the fabric of our educational system. It refers to any dishonest act intended to gain an unfair advantage in an examination — before, during, or even after the exam.
Across West Africa, this issue is escalating due to socio-economic pressures, a culture of impunity, and weak enforcement systems. Beyond academics, it poses a serious threat to national development and security by eroding institutional integrity and public trust.
📊 WASSCE Statistics (2023–2025)
Data from WAEC presented at the campaign revealed a worrying upward trend:
*44,586 candidates (10.02%) in 2023
*62,046 candidates (13.56%) in 2024
*67,780 candidates (14.88%) in 2025
A regional breakdown further shows:
*Ashanti Region, Bono Region, Bono East Region, Ahafo Region, Greater Accra Region and others recorded fluctuating trends
*Central Region, Eastern Region, Upper East Region, Volta Region, and Oti Region showed increasing trends
*Western Region and Western North Region recorded a sharp rise in malpractice cases
Notably, collusion detected in scripts accounted for over 88% of malpractice cases, making it the most dominant form.
⚖️ Sanctions and Consequences
The consequences of malpractice are severe:
*6,295 candidates had subject results cancelled for bringing foreign materials
*653 candidates had entire results cancelled for possessing mobile phones
*908 candidates’s results withheld, with 158 entire results pending investigation
*185 schools affected due to collusion concerns
Additionally:
*35 individuals (including 19 teachers)* were implicated
*19 were prosecuted and convicted, facing fines or imprisonment
* Several arrests were made for impersonation, organized cheating, and digital leakage of exam answers
GES has reaffirmed its commitment to severely punish any staff involved in malpractice.
⚠️ National Implications
Examination malpractice has far-reaching consequences:
Erosion of Educational Integrity
* Destroys fairness
* Promotes unqualified advancement
* Weakens Ghana’s academic credibility
Threat to Governance & Economy
* Allows unqualified individuals into leadership
* Fuels corruption and mismanagement
* Damages Ghana’s international reputation
Insecurity & Social Impact
* Contributes to crime and instability
* Encourages dishonesty in society
* Leads to frustration and potential social unrest
Impact on Teachers
Teachers face increasing pressure, including:
* Psychological stress
* Temptation through bribery
* Threats when resisting malpractice
This undermines their professionalism and the quality of education delivery.
Why Integrity Matters
A credible examination system:
* Promotes merit-based success
* Strengthens governance and institutions
* Enhances national development
* Reduces corruption and drives innovation
A Collective Responsibility
The fight against examination malpractice requires everyone:
Students – Commit to honest work
Parents – Support learning, not shortcuts
Teachers – Uphold professional ethics
Invigilators – Enforce rules strictly
Government & Judiciary – Ensure strict enforcement
Traditional & Religious Leaders – Promote moral values
Everyone has a role — no one is exempt.
Conclusion
A credible examination system is essential for Ghana’s future. Integrity must be upheld at all levels.
With leadership from stakeholders like Mr. Gabriel Antwi, the message is clear:
Say NO to “apor.”
Say YES to integrity.
Together, we can protect our education system and secure a better future.
