In modern day aviation, it is completely unthinkable to organize air traffic without the iconic presence of control towers present at all major airports around the world.

But it wasn't always like that. It wasn't until the early 1920s after the First World War that the construction of air control towers began.

The very first Air Traffic Control Tower was recorded in Croydon, Londen's then main airport at the time, approximately 20km south of the capital.

“In 1920, there was no idea of how a control tower and even an airport should act. So it was up to early adopters to develop, test and implement the ideas that would allow air travel to safely grow.”

It was the construction of this first tower that kick-started the growth and development of commercial aviation.
