Over the urge of last week, we were pleased to have hosted collaborators from Wageningen University & Research and partners from the African Centre for Cell Biology of Infectious Pathogens (WACCBIP) - University of Ghana at the Navrongo Health Research Centre.
Their engagement with our Health and Demographic Surveillance System provided a valuable opportunity to demonstrate how community health workers are leveraging the platform to strengthen malaria surveillance and response at the community level.
The visit also enabled hands-on participation in entomological sampling activities and a local stakeholder workshop focused on implementation strategies.
Such exchanges reinforce our shared commitment to advancing data-driven and locally grounded solutions as we collectively work toward the last mile of malaria control and elimination.

On this World Malaria Day, under the theme โDriven to End Malaria: Now We Can, Now We Must,โ at the Navrongo Health Research Centre, we reaffirm our unwavering commitment to eliminating malaria through cutting-edge research and community-centered interventions.
For decades, our work has generated vital evidence that shapes national and global malaria control strategies; from surveillance systems to innovative prevention approaches that protect vulnerable populations, especially children and pregnant women. The progress made so far shows that ending malaria is within reach.
However, this is not the time for complacency. It is a moment for renewed urgency, stronger partnerships, and sustained investment in research, innovation, and equitable healthcare delivery.
Together with our partners and communities, we remain driven to translate knowledge into action, because now we can, and indeed, now we must end malaria.

Over the course of last week, the Navrongo Health Research Centre (NHRC) today hosted a distinguished delegation led by Prof. Samuel Kaba Akoriyea, Director-General of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), as part of a high-level working visit to meningitis-prone regions of northern Ghana.
During his engagement with the Centreโs leadership and research teams, He highlighted the persistent challenge posed by seasonal outbreaks of meningitis in Ghanaโs meningitis belt and the toll they continue to take on lives each year.

Dr. Akoriyea charged the Navrongo Health Research Centre (NHRC) to lead intensified research into the root causes of recurrent meningitis outbreaks and the annual pattern of meningitis-related deaths, urging a scientific approach that will inform sustainable interventions and policy decisions.
The Director-General encouraged deeper collaboration between the NHRC, other health research centres, including (KHRC), regional health directorates, community leaders, and policymakers to ensure research findings translate into action on the ground.
๐๐ฎ๐๐ฅ๐ข๐ ๐ก๐๐๐ฅ๐ญ๐ก ๐๐๐ฏ๐จ๐๐๐๐ฒ: Dr. Akoriyea also appealed to communities to seek early healthcare at the first sign of illness rather than delaying, and highlighted the role of research in shaping targeted prevention and treatment strategies.
This visit reaffirms the Navrongo Health Research Centre's pivotal role in addressing priority health challenges through evidence-based research and its commitment to improving public health outcomes across Ghanaโs northern regions.

The Navrongo Health Research Centre in collaboration with the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai has begun training for 31 health professionals as field workers for the Evaluation of the AYA Integrated Healthcare Initiative (AYA-IHI) under Ghanaโs Networks of Practice (NoP)!
Non-communicable diseases like hypertension (HTN) and Type 2 diabetes (T2D) remain a major public health challenge in Ghana. Many people are undiagnosed, untreated, or poorly monitored, increasing the risk of heart disease, stroke, and other complications.
The Networks of Practice (NoP) initiative was introduced by the Government of Ghana to strengthen primary healthcare, bridge gaps between CHPS compounds and district hospitals, and improve screening, diagnosis, referral, and control of NCDs.
Through the AYA-IHI project, targeted interventions are being implemented across 16 districts in the Ashanti Region to improve NCD care.
The 6-day workshop will entail training health workers on HTN and T2D guidelines, strengthening referral systems, expanding community screening, empowering patients for self-management, and building sustainable laboratory and research systems.
The newly trained field workers will support a comprehensive monitoring and evaluation process that tracks:
โ๏ธ Provider training and knowledge
โ๏ธ Screening and diagnosis rates
โ๏ธ Use of digital health tools
โ๏ธ Patient self-management
โ๏ธ Continuity of care for HTN and T2D
This evaluation will generate critical evidence to guide policies and strengthen Ghanaโs primary healthcare system for better NCD prevention and control.
At the Navrongo Health Research Centre (NHRC), we remain committed to advancing people-centred, data-driven healthcare that improves lives and builds a healthier Ghana.
