Every year, thousands of women and young girls migrate from Ghana's poorer north to the major cities of the south in search of a better life.

Kaya ChildCare is a social enterprise aimed at reducing the health and security risks faced by babies and infants of Kayayoo in markets in Accra; we do this by providing access to quality Early Childhood education for the infants. What options does a mother have when she has to work, but has nowhere safe to leave her child?

For a kayayoo (head porter) mother, reality often means carrying her child on her back under the scorching sun, while navigating busy markets in search of the daily income, or leaving the child in unmonitored, unsafe corners nearby. More often than not, this is a familiar sight; nine times out of ten, you have seen a kayayoo mother, working with an infant on her back. In the absence of safe, affordable child care, daily survival comes at the cost of early learning, safety, and stability.

With a mission to reduce the health and security risks faced by infants and young children of kayayei in Accra markets, Kaya Childcare Centre (KCC) has spent the past seven years expanding access to quality early childhood care.

Building on this, KCC is introducing baby-sitting spaces called Childcare Kiosks, bringing safe, accessible care directly into market spaces. Through a micro-franchise model, young local women are trained and supported to run these branded kiosks, providing care for children under four using structured play and learning content.

This practical community-based solution not only creates safe spaces for children, but also equips young people, particularly women with skills and income opportunities in the care economy.

While kayayoo mothers carry heavy loads in Ghana’s markets, we’re ensuring their children carry hope, education, and a healthy start to life.

This Giving Tuesday, help us reach our $16,000 goal to keep providing safe learning spaces, nutritious meals, and quality early education.

Simply because every child deserves a future.
