Have you ever been at the receiving end of being viewed through the lens of a ‘single story’? Do you remember what it felt like? A ‘single story’ is an overly simplistic and pejorative narrative that presents only one facet of the multi-faceted (TED, 2009). This ‘single story’ approach can be so pervasive, that all it’s perpetrators see, hear, feel, touch, and/or taste when they interact through that lens is that parochial view. David Brooks characterizes this as ‘objectivism’ and one of the qualities of a Diminisher*. This approach fails to behold you for all you are. The opposite quality, he shared, is ‘a holistic attitude’ that characterizes the Illuminator*. ‘A holistic attitude’ recognizes that an individual is multi-faceted, and even when our interest in them is encapsulated in only one facet, our interest must be pursued with the awareness that they are more than that facet of our interest.
This approach of ‘a holistic attitude’ benefits both the Illuminator and the person with whom they are interacting. To the person the illuminator is interacting with, the interraction leaves them with a sense of wholesome completeness — that they are more than what the Illuminator’s interest is in them. For the Illuminator, Palmer’s (1993) thought that “every epistemology becomes ethic” (Palmer, 1993) is true, i.e., the kind of person we become often depends on the way we attend to others.
Watch out for the “single story” pitfall.

BUSINESS IDEAS
Thrift Business
GH¢200+
First of all, you must know how to sell. A lot of people venture into sales without knowing how to do it. The best people to learn from are those who already doing it.
However, let's go through some steps.
STARTING
You must first decide on the type of thrift you want to sell. Clothes, shoes, bags, etc. Then break it down to whether you'll be selling only men's clothes, women or children.
WHERE TO BUY
Every main market has where you can get low cost but high quality thrift to buy. You can also buy from those who can afford to buy thrift in bales as you can buy a quantity at a good price.
WHERE TO SELL
Social media has made it very easy to market items. Focus on apps where sharing your products is easy. IG is the most preferred of people but the X (formerly Twitter) threaded tweets, makes it easier to share your tweets under active and trending tweets or videos which draws people to your profile.
HOW TO MARK UP PROFITS
Start small. Don't focus on huge profits from the beginning.
DON'T USE YOUR PROFITS
Learn to separate business capital from spending money. If you get GHC50 profit, add it to your capital and buy more. Do that over time until you can afford to pay yourself just a little without it affecting your capital.
CUSTOMER SERVICE
Getting quality thrift is important but how to sell it is equally important and that's the language you use.
Be polite
You can attract more bees with honey than vinegar. Learn to be polite to people especially those who immediately attack your posts when you've never sold to them before. How you respond to them can either attract business or scare people away from you.
Be specific
Let people know what you sell is what you have available. If you have plans of negotiating, stick to a least price. Don't price people based on their profiles. Also, add the price to the posts. Don't tell people to DM you.
Be kind
Your social interaction can make or break your business.
Mind your business
Some people can tell you about others who did X, Y, Z. It could be a trap. Focus on selling instead of giving people topics to trend
Be truthful
Deliver on time. No delays. Don't steal what's not yours. Also, your customers deserve to know if something is in stock or not or if there's an issue you have to deal with.
Good luck in starting your thrift Business
