KNUST SRC ELECTIONS- MATTERS ARISING EDITION 2

If there is anything that saddens me about this whole election brouhaha of the supposed Dean's interference it is the fact that one strong bragging rights of a FULLY AUTOMATED FOOL PROOF BIOMETRIC VOTING ATTESTED TO BY CANDIDATES OWN AGENTS HAS BEEN LOST....THE CHALLENGE I THREW AS I PHONED IN WHEN THE PROVISIONAL RESULTS WERE DECLARED WAS THAT GOVT SHOULD TAKE A LISTEN THAT WE HAVE ENOUGH BRAINS AT KNUST TO UNDERTAKE A NATIONWIDE BIOMETRIC VERIFICATION FOLLOWED BY ELECTRONIC VOTING THAT CAN BE COUNTED IN REAL TIME...
My common phrase for is also lost.."WE ARE THE BEST UNIVERSITY IN THE NATION THIS IS KNUST WE KNOW WHO WE ARE ...THIS IS HALLOWED GROUNDS".

A second point is the sleepless nights some young people in UITS spent under the direction of their director has been poopooed..... for three nights in a row they sweated with me in my office with the EC and his team to operationalise the process do the right thing

As for the deans supposed interference FOR WHICH HE MUST DIE...well the last time I checked he intervened to rescue some equipment, at 830 pm 30 minutes after the official closure..... because intelligent reports told me that the 100 laptops we brought from Accra at a great cost needed to be taken way to prevent losses... That some strong boys had planned to take away. these laptops at an average cost of 3000GH ₵ per one.. and I needed to save the system some money....If strong boys gave me respect to allow me to take the laptops away...DEATH TO THE DEAN NOW IS A BIT OVER DONE.....History should tell you...I am your greatest friend critic defender for students right...those student LEADERS who work with me know that those i teach also know I am still the no nonsense old fashioned Presbyterian who tries to walk the talk and talk the walk.... I WILL NOT LET MY PRECIOUS STUDENTS GO THROUGH ANYTHING I WILL NOT GO THROUGH MYSELF

Pipe down relax sort out your differences learn for your examinations....... I could also have taken to the airwaves but to what point KNUST will be the loser

I am sure Aaron Duke Sasu has learnt in his young life that he may be smarter than myself but what he is yet to gain is the experience that only age brings.. I saw his being labelled as, KNUST administration man long before his young mind could appreciate; giving him at this point the benefit of the doubt. His opportunistic usage of the joint service platform twice when VC was there with perhaps a hidden political agenda. is now obvious to him NOW if it was not then. I NOW HAVE THE UNPLEASANT DUTY TO PICK UP THE PIECES.... the jury is still out whether he got any advantage....I am glad I told his shenanigan minders once i got to know of his candidature. that ..IF I HAD POWER I WOULD HAVE DISQUALIFIED HIM. i made my feelings known to him ..I told him in the face a day before the election of my total unhappiness. of what he did. he said he did not see my point and that he disagreed with me....... EXPERIENCE rather than SMUG SMARTNESS has won the day... I AM TEMPTED TO TELL HIM i TOLD YOU SO..... It is up to him to redeem that image. To think that the DEAN stole the election for someone he did want to contest let alone win defies logic....that somehow that I was privy to the results in the strong room which I was not and that as soon as I saw him win by200 votes i closed the election...lame thinking.....FOR ME IT DOES NOT MATTER THE COLOUR OF THE CAT (politically affiliated or neutral)SO LONG AS HE CAN CATCH MICE (i.e. represent the interest of students in the best way to maximize results)it is good enough for me.....I have long stood accused of belonging to one party or the other..... DEPENDING ON WHICH SIDE IS FACING THE ROD...... Even in the aftermath of this contest I am accused of wanting to helping NDC win 10 seats Ashanti (preposterous) on one hand and on the other and NPP guys are winning and that I met Sammy Awuku......(.laughable)...those who know me well.. know. I have always sought to balance the table...when VC met the strong boys in Conti...i INSISTED HE BE INVITED TO KAT TO BALANCE THE TABLE....

when Nana Addo visited campus in the last election...i told the then TEIN president SCOOBY to get President Mahama here........I AGREE WITH MY BOSS THAT WHEN YOU ENTER KNUST YOU ARE A STUDENT NOTHING ELSE......politics has had very little influence how university structures operate

The idea that the best way for students to be heard when fighting the institution that gives them their degrees is ACTIVISM and agitation INSTEAD OF DIPLOMATIC DIALOGUE IS A FALLACY....the idea that students can be independent of the University that awards them a degree is AN ILLUSION....... INTERDEPENDENCE IS KEY...... DIPLOMATS WIN THE WAR...ACTIVIST WIN PYRRHIC BATTLES .....Ask Kwaku Oppong , Yaw Oduro, Philemon Laar, Eben Bonsra and Caleb Fuga and they will tell YOU JAW JAW IS THE BEST.. NOT WAR WAR...

THE SILVER LINING IN THIS SAGA is seeing the strongmen of KAT and KONTI unite on a cause for a proper peace..... long lasting peace at last instead of the artificial peace I sought to create early in my tenure. AT THE PEACE JUNCTION...... I hope strong boys will remember what brought them together and never go back to the old vomit of hostility..... I miss Dumega, Festival, Jo Napen King David, Major P*e, Freeman FOR THEIR INTELLECTUAL PROWESS.
Strong boys do not create a jungle, assault and intimidate their own elected leaders. Criminality will not be allowed to prevail...... it is ancient and Neolithic..in the 21st century. I expect these strong boys who know me as well as I know them take a path OF integrity and above reproach stance instead strong hand mafioso tactics..

Calm down my dear students your papa on location has no interest who leads you .....Settle down and go through your exams....AFISEM (housematters) are not played in the media...do not allow egos and name calling get in the way.... sort yourselves out. quietly do not wash your dirty linen in public..you do not have the time or the money.. to go through litigation and counter litigation....

my doors are always open Odikro Odiyifooo and their strong men know that...I appreciate the respect and relevance i am given in the 2 halls... otherwise why am I the Dean of Students ? i am still the students thumb to untie the knots.... the bridge that must be crossed on both sides STUDENTS CANNOT DO CHERRY PICKING AND CHOOSE WHAT IS PALATABLE AND IGNORE BITTER MEDICATION THAT HEALS ALL THE SAME
At 57, noisy and boisterous as I am...i do not like my name in the media i cannot afford to soil my reputation and recover........ INTELLECTUAL MISCHIEF IS NEVER MY PORTION...I AM NOT COMPLICATED WHAT YOU SEE IS WHAT YOU GET

On the day Liverpool FC lost the old man is writing on the wall for the first time...God bless you in your exam...Share it with as many students as you can but not the press...LONG LIVE KNUST..THIS IS HALLOWED GROUNDS

POLITICAL SHENANIGANS PLEASE STOP THE MISCHIEF.......THERE IS A TIME TABLE TO MEET REGARDING HANDING OVER TRAINING TO FOLLOW BUDGETS TO DRAW..PUT KNUST STUDENTS YOU CLAIM TO REPRESENT FIRST EGOS MUST COME DOWN RATIONALITY AND COMMON SENSE MUST PREVAIL QUICKLY... JAW JAW ON YOUR ELECTION STALEMATE.......THE LAST TIME I CHECKED FUGAH'S ADMINISTRATION HAS MANAGED TO PERSUADE THE ADMINISTRATION TO CONTRACT A LOAN TO COMPLETE SRC HOSTEL AT A GO..THE WINDOW IS CLOSING

IF THE DEANS INTERFERENCE MEANS ENSURING STUDENTS MANAGE YOUR MONIES PROPERLY...I REST MY CASE...THE LAST TIME I CHECKED A STUDENT IS ALLEGED TO HAVE EMBEZZLED 85,000 GHANA CEDIS.....THE UNIVERSITY STILL HAS LESS ENDOWED VERY POOR STUDENTS..LET US ALL GET TO WORK

PROGRESS ON CRYSTAL ROSE CRISIS
1. On behalf of Management, we wish to express sincere appreciation to the victims of the Crystal Rose crisis for their show of restraint and total cooperation to weave ourselves out of the mishap.

For students who opted for refund, a significant quantum has been disbursed so far. In the week ahead, we are hopeful that the full amount will be paid to complete the exercise. We all made this a success. Kudos!

2. Beginning this Monday, 27/01/14 a dedicated shuttle will ferry students to and fro the accommodation facility provided by the University for the victims of the Crystal Rose fire. The fare is 50 pesewas.

CRYSTAL ROSE HOSTEL CRISIS UPDATE - 5
We underestimated the bed spaces for ladies. There are 4 more ladies’ bed spaces to be filled and about 15 for the gentlemen. Again for those who want to make a quick buck with the refund, remember your friend may only be putting up with you in this immediate period of stress. In my candid opinion, it is better to have your own place and space for the long haul of the semester. Make use of this opportunity to live on campus.
If anyone wants to switch his/her option, he can simply SMS or ‘whatsapp’ his name, programme and year to be crosschecked with the official list to 0208244000.
The ladies’ rooms are ready to be occupied and the gentlemen will have theirs ready by Tuesday evening.
Please activate your Vodafone numbers. It would be the principal means of communication to students.

GENERAL NOTICE ON CRYSTAL ROSE HOSTEL CRISIS
There are currently 36 bed spaces for gentlemen and 15 bed spaces for ladies for occupancy in staff bungalows on campus. The ladies who opted for option ‘c’, that is ‘those that want no refunds but want to be housed as close as possible to the faculty and not in the halls’ will be ready by tomorrow Saturday 18, January, 2014. All the ladies who selected that option are expected to report at the Office of the Dean of Students between the hours of 2pm and 4pm to be ferried to the location. It would be 3 in a room with a sitting room and a kitchen. It is clean and with security. That for the gentlemen would be ready by Tuesday evening. There are still a number of spaces available on first come first serve basis for both ladies and gentlemen.
My Office is opened tomorrow Saturday 18, January 2014 from 10am to 5pm to register those who want to leave on campus and to complete the registration of all those who lived in Crystal Rose Hostel.
There are 60 students to be accounted for out of the 300 who lived there. There has been a meeting the management of Crystal Rose Hostel and myself and that the second option of those who have found their own hostel would be joined to those who want a refund so that they get their refund back.
In my candid opinion, as many as can take up the accommodation on campus should do so in other to have your own space and peace to study.
The management of Crystal Rose Hostel would like students to know that as a result of the long bank processes mean that, those who need their refund can only be paid from the Dean of Students’ Office by Thursday, 23 January, 2014.
All should exercise patience.

CRYSTAL ROSE CRISIS
I continue to appreciate the response of the victims of Crystal Rose Hostel fire. I do not want my office to tackle the issue in piecemeal and we would want to make sure every student is settled for academic work by mid-week next week. The three (3) options are available for the victims to choose from;
a. Those who have made alternative arrangements, you may have half the money you paid back.
b. Those who have found accommodation on their own and want a refund should present an invoice of the hostel; that should not be more than what should be refund in (a).
c. Those that want no refunds but want to be housed as close as possible to the faculty and not in the halls.
It seems to me the attraction of some quick money is making people choose out of proportion the first option. My long association with students’ affairs suggests to me that relationship with friends who have put up with you in your crisis can quickly turn sour. I suggest that both the second and particularly the third option is suitable at a time where you want your own bed and your space to study. I am fighting at your own corner. I cannot guarantee you similar conditions as you had with Crystal Rose Hostel but the accommodation I am willing to provide will be safe, comfortable, private and near enough to the faculties. Please pass it around and ensure the about hundred (100) persons who have not come to registered will do so by close of day tomorrow.

GENERAL NOTICE ON CRYSTAL ROSE HOSTEL CRISIS
There has been a second meeting between the Dean of Students and the management of Crystal Rose Hostel and I would want to appreciate once again the dignity with which our students have faced this tragedy. Life must go on.
At the close of day, about a hundred (100) of the three hundred (300) legally resident students have come to register with the Dean of Students office.
Please I urge all those who have not registered so far to do so, so that holistic solutions will be provided once and for all. It is my expectation that, by a week today, all my students are settled down for real academic work. I can only imagine the stress that those who lost everything in the fire are going through.
This afternoon, there was a final year student who had lost everything in the fire and yet had a project to defend this week. In situations like that, my heart bleeds, I simply cannot empathize enough.
In all this, however, let us remain focused on the issues and there are 3 options for the short term;
For traumatized students who want to talk through their problems please come to the offices of the Dean of Students at the commercial area and see a counselor.

GENERAL NOTICE ON CRYSTAL ROSE CRISIS
A meeting was held between some members of Crystal Rose Management, some members KNUST Management and some SRC leaders on Tuesday January 14th 2014 between 2pm-4pm. All sides would want to put on record, the appreciation of the dignity with which our affected students in Crystal Rose have borne their present tragedy. Tough questions were asked and some answers have been provided, yet many more answers need to be provided, after all the necessary reports are in.
In the interim, these are some directives regarding the way forward;
All legally registered resident students are to report at the Office of the Dean of Students to provide details regarding their
i. Names
ii. Nationality
iii. Program and year
iv. Student ID Number
v. Number of the room they occupy
vi. Number of students that occupy the room and the
vii. Fees per person
This registration must be completed in person by close of work on Friday 17th January, 2014 at 5:00pm. This data will be compared with the University’s own record of students and those provided by the Management of Crystal Rose. Once you come to register, you will be required to choose one of three options in the short term that would attempt to meet your needs somewhat:
a. For those who have made alternative arrangements, you may have half the money you paid back.
b. Those who have found accommodation on their own and want a refund should present an invoice of the hostel; that should not be more than what should be refund in (a).
c. Those who want no refunds but want to be housed.
It is important that this exercise is completed by the deadline so that we would use the weekend to sort out and that hopefully by a week today everybody is settled.
Students are to note that for legal and safety reasons no student would be allowed to enter the hostel let alone live there except to take away their belongings under supervision.
Crystal Rose management is strongly directed to beef up security on their property.
Our first priority as a University is to get our students settled as quickly as possible in the short term. Other concerns that students may have would be addressed in the medium term. In as much as we empathize most deeply with our students who remain our topmost priority, we need also to show at the same time some level of understanding to the management of Crystal Rose who have had to grapple with settling their student customers in the soonest possible time and at the same time dialogue with their bankers, insurers, lawyers, contractors, etc.
Our heartfelt empathy again goes to our students particularly to those students who lost everything in the fire. My office will keep you posted. Let us all remain calm and civil to one another in this period of crisis. Let us keep the dialogue going. You can ‘wassup’ me on 0208244000 or reach me on Facebook on Dean of students, KNUST, or email me at [email protected]
For traumatized students who want to talk through their problems please come to the offices of the Dean Of Students at the commercial area and see a counselor.

Dean Of Students on behalf of University management welcomes all students back to campus. Am hopeful you would give your bodies sufficient rest to be fully recharged to begin and end the second semester successfully. We want to particularly tell our students in Crystal Rose Hostel that the University is with them in this moment of distress and have actively engaged the management to find a solution to their demise in the shortest possible time.
For legal and safety reasons, no students would be allowed entry into the building; do not even take it when it is offered. You would however be allowed to take out any goods you left behind in your room. It should be under supervision of a hostel representative and you would sign an inventory document which the official would also sign. Again for legal reasons, insist on doing that.
Let me also assure all students that the University, SRC leadership are working together with the management of the hostel to provide alternative accommodation to the affected students.
Sadly we do not live in a cartoon world where instant answers can be provided. We are asking all sides to exercise utmost patience and constraint as we grapple with the solutions.
