SHAPING CITIES, DEFINING THE FUTURE: How KNUST's Department of Planning is rewriting Ghana's urban and settlement story

In the heart of one of Africa's most dynamic universities, a quiet revolution in urban thought is underway. The Department of Planning at KNUST has emerged as far more than an academic unit. It is a living laboratory where ideas meet policy, and research reshapes real communities across Ghana and beyond.

At the core of this distinction is a remarkable assembly of scholars whose work does not merely occupy journal pages but actively moves the needle on how cities are built, how people are housed, and how millions navigate their daily lives.

Prof. Owusu Amponsah, Associate Professor & Head, Centre for Settlements Studies. His research on sustainable urban development and informal urbanism shapes national policy on inclusive cities.

Prof. Michael Poku-Boansi, is a leading voice in transport planning and socio-economic impact assessment. He undertakes rigorous research and real-world infrastructure policy worls through global collaborations.

Prof. Clifford Amoako, investigates urban housing and migration dynamics. His works have deepened the department's research output and broadened its international partnerships.

Dr. Michael Osei Asibey is a scholar whose work in settlement dynamics and urban change continues to enrich the department's diverse, globally connected research ecosystem.

Together, these academics represent something rare. They present a critical mass of expertise that is simultaneously local in its commitment and global in its reach. Their combined output spans urban development, transport, housing, resettlement, and settlement studies; fields that are not peripheral to Ghana's future but absolutely central to it.

Together, they represent what it means to be a centre of excellence; not as a slogan, but as a daily practice of scholarship, service, and impact that puts KNUST's Department of Planning firmly on the map.

The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has named a newly established Infrastructure Research Hub at the Department of Planning after Hon. Francis Asenso-Boakye MP, MP for Bantama, in recognition of his contributions to development planning and infrastructure in Ghana.

The facility, commissioned on March 16, 2026, was created through a partnership between the Bantama Asenso-Boakye Foundation and the Department of Planning to promote research, collaboration, and policy innovation in infrastructure planning, sustainable housing, transport systems, and urban management. The hub includes furnished offices, a reception area, and modern research equipment to support academic and professional work.

Speaking at the event, Hon. Francis Asenso-Boakye emphasized the need to bridge academic research and infrastructure development. Akyamfour Asafo Boakye Agyemang-Bonsu, Chairman of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology Council, and Richard Ofori Agyeman Boadi, Mayor of Kumasi, praised the initiative as a major boost to research-driven solutions for Ghanaโ€™s urban and infrastructure challenges.
