Trench Composting: Feed the Soil Right Where Plants Grow 🌱🪱
No compost pile, no hauling, no turning. Just bury scraps in the bed and let soil life handle the rest. This method turns the root zone into a slow-release fertilizer system.
HOW IT WORKS:
Plant crops along the outer edges of the bed. Keep a strip down the center open. Dig a trench, bury scraps, cover with soil. Roots grow toward nutrients. Worms move in and process everything underground.
THE TRENCH — 8–12 INCHES DEEP 🧱
Dig along the center of the bed.
Width: 6–8 inches
Length: as long as the bed
Pile the removed soil along the sides — you’ll use it to cover scraps.
WHAT TO BURY: 🍎
✓ Vegetable peels, fruit scraps, cores
✓ Crushed eggshells (adds calcium)
✓ Coffee grounds and paper tea bags
✓ Spent plants and soft stems
✗ No meat, dairy, oily foods, or bread
THE SOIL CAP — CRITICAL 🌍
Always cover scraps with at least 4 inches of soil immediately.
This locks in smells, discourages pests, and creates the dark, moist zone worms love.
WHAT HAPPENS UNDERGROUND:
Worms detect food and migrate to the trench.
They break down scraps and leave nutrient-rich castings.
Their tunnels improve aeration and drainage.
Plant roots naturally grow toward this underground nutrient band.
TIMING: ⏳
Add scraps weekly and move along the trench instead of dumping in one spot.
By mid-season, early deposits are fully decomposed and feeding your crops.
No pile to manage. No waiting months. Just steady soil building right where your plants need it.
