In a laboratory far from the confectionery aisles where consumers make their choices, a familiar Ghanaian vegetable is being reimagined as a key ingredient in chocolate.

At the Department of Food Science and Technology, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, researchers are making steady progress on an ambitious project that could reshape how chocolate is formulated, using pectin extracted from okra as an alternative to lecithin.

The Department of Computer Science at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi, has launched a comprehensive training programme in Artificial Intelligence (AI), Robotics and other emerging technologies aimed at building practical skills among National Service Personnel and staff.

The training is being conducted in collaboration with the Technology Consultancy Centre (TCC-KNUST) and GuruKewl Inc., an international technology education organisation with expertise in AI, robotics, and embedded systems training.

“Ghana and Africa have an opportunity, and it is an opportunity we must not miss,” said Richie-Mike Wellington, Deputy Secretary-General of the Ghana Commission for UNESCO, in his welcome address

The advice was delivered during a stakeholder meeting organised in preparation for the African International Conference on Quantum Computing and Simulation, scheduled for February 2026, where participants discussed how quantum science could affect development, security and access to technology.

Dr Henry Martin, Coordinator for Mathematical and Computational Physics (MCP) Unit, Department of Physics, at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), joined the International Community of Quantum Science and Technology (QST) at Cosmo Caixa (leading science museum), Barcelona, Spain, for the Quantum Education Summit 2025. “Air pollution causes over one million premature deaths every year in Africa. The air we breathe is under siege,” he stressed.

Speaking on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Asamoah made this call at the third edition of the African School on Air Quality and Pollution Prevention, that brought together environmental experts, researchers, students, policymakers, and international partners to tackle one of Africa’s most pressing public health threats, air pollution.

The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi has conferred the Honorary Award of Distinguished Professor on Dr. Victoria Pearl Dzogbefia, a towering figure in biochemistry, research, and academic leadership, during the university's 59th congregation.

Dr. Dzogbefia’s story is one of groundbreaking achievements and transformative influence, particularly in blazing a trail for women in science within the institution.

The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi, has honoured Emeritus Professor Francis Boakye with an Honorary Award of Distinguished Service at the 59th congregation.

Professor Boakye, a trailblazer in Solid State Physics and a founding member of the Ghana Institute of Physics, has been a cornerstone of KNUST’s academic community for over five decades.

He joined the Department of Physics in 1969 as a lecturer and, although he officially retired in 2003, his commitment to the university and the scientific community has remained unwavering.

The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi has appointed Professor Lawrence Sheringham Borquaye as Head of the Central Laboratory, the university’s flagship shared scientific facility that hosts advanced analytical instruments for teaching and research.

Prof. Borquaye will also oversee the newly completed KNUST Multipurpose Laboratory, a flexible teaching and innovation space designed to provide hands-on practical training across multiple disciplines.
