📖 Meaning & Explanation

🔵 For Men:
The ideal fragrance is one with a strong, noticeable scent but leaves no visible color on the skin or clothing — such as oud, musk, and most colognes.

🔴 For Women:
Among women or with her maḥārim, a woman may use fragrances that are visible in color — like henna, saffron-based scents, and kohl — but whose scent does not spread to non-maḥram men. If a woman goes out to public spaces, a separate hadith applies:

«أيُّما امرأةٍ استعطَرَت، فمَرَّت على قومٍ لِيَجِدوا رِيحَها، فهي زانيةٌ»

“Any woman who perfumes herself and passes by men so they smell her fragrance — she is like one who has committed zinā.”

📌 Note: This is a comparison in gravity of sin — not literal zinā — highlighting how serious intentional temptation is in Islam.

These two hadiths do not contradict each other:

The first defines the appropriate type of fragrance
The second defines the ruling on going out with spreading perfume.
