LANGUAGE PAPER 2
Time: 2 hours
(70 MARKS)

Answer three questions in all: Questions 1 and 2 from Section A and one question from Section B.
Credit will be given for clarity of thought and orderly presentation of work.

SECTION A
Answer both questions in this section.
You are advised to spend about 30 minutes on each question.

1. COMPREHENSION (20 MARKS)
Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that follow it.

In the quiet village of Omokachi, beauty was not merely admired; it was feared. Ihuoma, whose grace moved like moonlight on still water, was the centre of that fear. She was gentle, respectful and industrious, yet sorrow clung to her life like a stubborn shadow. When her husband, Emenike, died suddenly after a minor injury, whispers rose in the village like harmattan dust. Some said death had always walked beside her; others believed she was too perfect for an ordinary destiny.

Despite the murmurs, Ihuoma bore her grief with dignity. She neither cursed the gods nor accused anyone of wrongdoing. Instead, she returned quietly to her fatherโ€™s compound, determined to live as a virtuous widow. Men admired her from afar, but few dared to approach her openly. They remembered Emenikeโ€™s strange death and feared the invisible forces that seemed to guard Ihuomaโ€™s heart.

Among those drawn to her was Ekwueme, a young man engaged to another woman. His love for Ihuoma grew slowly but deeply, like roots pushing through hard soil. Though reason warned him to stay away, his emotions refused restraint. The elders noticed his distraction and cautioned him, reminding him that the gods do not tolerate reckless desires. Still, Ekwueme believed love could conquer fate, a belief that would soon be tested.

As events unfolded, the village priest revealed a terrible truth: Ihuoma was bound to the Sea-King, a jealous spirit husband. Any mortal man who attempted to claim her fully would invite death. This revelation explained the pattern of tragedy that followed her. Love, which should have been a blessing, became a curse sharpened by the supernatural. The truth struck the villagers like thunder in the dry season, shaking their confidence in human choice.

The story of Ihuoma exposes the fragile boundary between free will and destiny. Her life suggests that beauty can be both a gift and a sentence, and that love may sometimes be a flame that burns those who hold it too tightly. In Omokachi, the people learned that defying unseen powers is like wrestling the wind. Ihuoma, who was admired by all yet possessed by none, remained a symbol of tragic perfection.

a. What role did the village priest play in the story?
b. What is the meaning of ... โ€˜wrestling the windโ€™?
c. Why could Ihuoma not marry normally?
d. โ€˜...who was admired by all yet possessed by noneโ€™
i. What is the grammatical name given to the above expression?
ii. What is its function in the sentence?
e. For each of the following words, find a word or phrase that can replace it as it has been used in the passage.
i. dignity
ii. virtuous
iii. restraint
iv. fragile
v. stubborn
f. Why was Ihuoma feared by the people in Omokachi?
g. How did Ihuoma react to the death of her husband?
h. How did Ihuomaโ€™s beauty affect Ekwueme?

2. SUMMARY (20 MARKS)
Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that follow it.
Your answer should be in your own words as far as possible.

As a Ghanaian person, I find it difficult to believe that Ghanaians, as a people, are as good-natured as the general description depicts in the phrase โ€˜Ghanaian hospitalityโ€™. What does anyone mean by hospitality or hospitableness โ€“ fellow-feeling, honest-dealing, compassion towards a guest or fellow Ghanaian?

Sometime ago, there was a native monster called kalabule. It was at the height of economic difficulties in which Ghanaians found themselves. What particularly made the period and kalabule oppressive was that when a trader sold an overpriced commodity to a familiar person, the sale went with the remark: โ€˜Honestly, had you been an unknown customer, Iโ€™d have given you this commodity at a price twice what I am giving it to you.โ€™ Is this sincerity?

Kalabule later gave birth to gvenabu. Gyenabu flourished under the โ€˜chitโ€™ system. To purchase flour, sugar or other essential commodity, you were issued with a chit, with which you transacted at an authorised shop. The intention was to remove middlemen from the buying and selling of commodities. Yet middlemen flourished. Chits, were procured through โ€˜connectionโ€™. They were instantly resold at the very venue of issue. A single chit to purchase flour would pass through the hands of several middlemen before reaching the โ€˜unconnectedโ€™ baker at several times the approved cost. This practice made bread cruelly expensive. Such wickedness and selfishness of Ghanaians became the order of the day and nothing was sold at the sane, approved price. With time, kalabule and gvenabu left the scene. But did they leave behind something they brought into being or there simply existed the entrenched cheating, selfishness and greed to which they gave their names?

Ghanaians abroad and their relatives back home, to whom are made periodic remittances, have consistently wished the Ghanaian cedi ill, praying that the currency would keep falling incessantly against the US dollar. Whenever the cedi shows signs of recovery, they are made livid for good reason โ€“ the remitters will have to send more dollars, which the recipients will exchange for less. Obviously, they think only of themselves. And these are hospitable Ghanaians. Do they even love the country?

Of late, Ghanaian trotro commercial drivers have reverted to โ€˜lengthening the transit routesโ€™ within the country. When kalabule was in its prime long-distance travellers carried stones or any rubbish in order to be charged for luggage. These drivers explain this attitude by drawing attention to the unprecedented traffic congestion on the roads. So, instead of driving straight to a known destination, they do โ€˜hop, step and jumpโ€™ by touting for only one third of the distance, only to tout for the second third and then tout for the final third on taking the illegal fares for the two shortened trips at the expense of their fellow Ghanaian, who pay more than they should. Do these drivers have any sympathy at all?

a. In one sentence, summarise how the writer presents commercial trotro drivers.
b. In one (1) sentence, summarise what the writer says about some Ghanaians living abroad and their relatives at home.
c. In one (1) sentence, summarise what the writer says about the kalabule traderโ€™s style as โ€˜Ghanaian hospitalityโ€™.
d. In one (1) sentence, summarise how the writer presents the โ€˜chitโ€™ system.

SECTION B
(30 MARKS)
Answer one question only from this section. Your essay should be at least 400 words long.

3. As the current school prefect, write a speech you will deliver outlining how undisciplined behaviour among the youth could be reduced.
4. Write an article for publication in a national newspaper on how Ghana can maintain the peace before, during and after elections.
5. Write a story to illustrate the saying โ€˜Better late than never.โ€™
6. Recently armed robbery has increased significantly in your area. Write a letter to the Metropolitan/Municipal/District Chief Executive of your area on how this menace can be curtailed.
7. The National Commission on Culture is organising an essay competition to unearth talents. Write your entry, describing how one festival in the country is celebrated.
