Four Key Strategies to Prevent Antibiotic Resistance:
1. Preventing Infections
a. Immunization
b. Safe food preparation
c. Handwashing
d. Preventing infections also prevents the spread of resistant bacteria.
2. Tracking
a. Local health agencies can gather data on the causes of antibiotic-resistant infections and search for risk factors that increase the likelihood of antibiotic-resistant infections. This information can be used on the health and policy levels to devise strategies to prevent those infections and the spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria/infections.
3. Increased Vigilance when Prescribing Antibiotics/Antibiotic Stewardship
a. Use antibiotics responsibly and only when necessary
b. Finish the course of antibiotics which have been prescribed despite improvement in symptoms
4. Developing New Drugs and Testing Mechanisms
a. Antibiotic resistance occurs naturally due to the evolution of bacteria-- so resistance is inevitable; However, misuse of antibiotics in humans and animals is accelerating the process
b. Scientists must continue to find new ways to keep up with resistant bacteria as well as new testing methods to track the development of resistance.
