The Abetifi District Office of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), led by District Director Roberta E. Koah, and liaising with public health professionals from the Ghana Health Service (GHS), organized a civic education programme for students of Abetifi R/C JHS. The programme was held at the Abetifi R/C JHS 3 classroom from 8:00 AM to 10:15 AM.

The initiative aimed to provide students with relevant health and civic education to enable them to make informed decisions ahead of Valentine’s Day and the Kwahu Easter Festival. Given the increasing concerns about teenage pregnancy and the rapid spread of HIV in the district, the session focused on equipping students with accurate information on s*xual health and responsible decision-making.

The Public Health manager, Mr Ransford Baah-Mensah used infographics and storytelling to engage the students, highlighting the alarming trend of children as young as 10 years old giving birth in the district and addressing the rapid spread of HIV. They discussed age-appropriate safety measures tailored for 12- to 16-year-olds, emphasizing an understanding of the physical and emotional changes of puberty and the importance of establishing personal boundaries. The session encouraged students to ask questions, seek guidance from trusted adults, and consider the benefits of delaying s*xual activity until they are fully prepared for the responsibilities of intimate relationships.

Ms. Koah stressed that programs like these are vital not only for providing accurate health information but also for shaping Ghana’s future leaders to be well-rounded individuals. She noted that such initiatives are key to combating the spread of misinformation and disinformation.

Rev. Father Paul Denkyi, the school priest, expressed his sincere gratitude to the NCCE and GHS for organizing such an impactful session.
