For several months, I have led the Koforidua Youth Engagement Centre to organise Career Mentorship and Job-Matching Support for Senior High Students across the region. We have also brought on board Career coaches from various fields in order to have practical positive impact on these students.

One thing that cuts across these seminars is the obliviousness of some final or second year students with regards to their choice of careers and the connection of such careers to their current courses of study.

Could these be as results of their bad grades attained from the Basic Education Certificate Examinations, Inadequate information steming from first year orientations at the Senior High/Technical Schools or Peer influence?

There were visible disappointments on the faces of those who were just realising their courses of study might not end them in their desired tertiary institutions (programmes) thereby affecting their future career journey.

The SHS Career Mentorship Seminar will now have to be redirected to final year Junior High Students to directly affect their studies, choice of programmes in the Senior High or Technical Schools as well as ensuring they seek help in making such choices.
