UHAS Marks 10th Prof. Atta Mills Leadership Lecture with Focus on Reproductive Health
The University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) marked the 10th edition of the John Evans Atta Mills (JEAM) Leadership Lecture Series, drawing together academics, health professionals, policymakers, students and development partners to deliberate on reproductive health challenges in Africa. The event, held on Thursday, May 14, 2026 at the Cedi Auditorium on the university’s main campus at Sokode-Lokoe, Ho, was themed “From Knowledge to Action: Bridging Africa’s Reproductive Health Gap – The Role of Health Training Institutions.”
The annual lecture series was instituted to honour the late President John Evans Atta Mills, whose administration facilitated the establishment of UHAS in 2011.
The Vice Chancellor of UHAS, Professor Lydia Aziato, Chairperson of the occasion, described the late Prof. Mills as a “credible academic, statesman and visionary leader” whose contributions to education and healthcare remain significant. She urged young people to prioritize education, exercise self-discipline and make responsible reproductive health decisions.
The Pro-Vice Chancellor, Professor Frank Edwin, emphasized the lecture’s role as a platform for reflection on leadership and national development. He noted that reproductive health remains one of Africa’s most pressing concerns, stressing the responsibility of health training institutions to translate knowledge into practical interventions that improve lives.
The Lecturer for the occasion was Her Excellency Dr. Eunice Brookman-Amissah, a former Ambassador of Ghana to the Kingdom of the Netherlands, a Member of Ghana’s Council of State and renowned reproductive health advocate. She delivered a powerful presentation highlighting maternal mortality, unsafe abortions, teenage pregnancies and inadequate healthcare systems across Africa.
She cited alarming statistics, noting that Africa accounts for approximately 6.2 million unsafe abortions annually, contributing significantly to maternal deaths. In Ghana alone, over 110,000 teenage pregnancies were recorded within a year.
Dr. Brookman-Amissah underscored the importance of comprehensive sexuality education (CSE), stronger healthcare systems and better awareness of Ghana’s abortion laws, which permit the procedure under specific conditions such as r**e, in**st or threats to the mother’s health.
Referencing frameworks like the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD), the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the African Union’s Maputo Protocol and Campaign for the Accelerated Reduction of Maternal Mortality in Africa (CARMMA), she lamented weak implementation across the continent. She called reproductive health a human rights issue and urged governments, educational institutions, religious bodies and civil society to collaborate in improving access to services.
The lecture also touched on sensitive but vital topics such as LGBTQI+ discussions and the need for informed dialogue.
The event concluded with a renewed call for intensified advocacy, policy implementation and public education to improve reproductive healthcare outcomes across Africa.

UHAS Graduates 1,097 at 2nd Session of 10th Congregation
The University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) has conferred degrees on 1,097 students during the second session of its 10th Congregation, held on Friday, May 15, 2026, at the Cedi Auditorium, Sokode-Lokoe, Ho. The graduating class comprised 967 undergraduates and 130 postgraduates from the School of Allied Health Sciences, School of Basic and Biomedical Sciences, School of Nursing and Midwifery and Fred N. Binka School of Public Health. Many of the graduates were working healthcare professionals who pursued UHAS’ sandwich programmes while serving in hospitals, clinics, laboratories and communities across Ghana.
Presiding over the ceremony, the University Council Chairman, Professor Kodzo Gavua, praised faculty and staff for their dedication to training health professionals. He affirmed UHAS’ ambition to remain Ghana’s premier health training institution and highlighted ongoing infrastructure projects, including the Laboratory Complex and the Hohoe Campus–Fodome Site.
He appealed to government to complete outstanding projects such as the 5.3-kilometre internal road network at the main campus. Professor Gavua noted that UHAS has now produced over 14,617 health professionals since its first graduation in 2016.
The Vice Chancellor of UHAS, Professor Lydia Aziato, delivered the state of the University address, reporting that UHAS currently has 10,292 students across 23 undergraduate and 25 postgraduate programmes, supported by 879 staff. She revealed that the University received 14,430 applications for the 2025/2026 academic year but admitted only 2,021 students due to infrastructure and staffing constraints, describing the figure as “woefully low.” She appealed for government clearance to recruit more academic staff. Professor Aziato also emphasized UHAS’ strong impact in health research and the consistent success of its graduates in national professional examinations.
Her Excellency Dr. Eunice Brookman-Amissah, former Ambassador and member of Ghana’s Council of State, delivered the 10th John Evans Atta Mills Leadership Lecture on May 14, 2026, under the theme From Knowledge to Action: Bridging Africa’s Productive Health Gap – The Role of Health Training Institutions. She spoke on the same topic during the graduation ceremony as the Guest Speaker where she reiterated the importance of continuous learning, compassion and humility in healthcare. During the ceremony, UHAS conferred an Honorary Doctorate on Dr. Brookman-Amissah in recognition of her outstanding contributions to health and public service.
The Volta Regional Minister, Honourable James Gunu, representing the Government of Ghana, congratulated the graduates and assured UHAS of government’s commitment to addressing its infrastructure deficit. He highlighted interventions under President John Dramani Mahama, including the free primary healthcare initiative, strengthening of the National Health Insurance Scheme and the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (“Mahama Care”), which expands coverage beyond NHIS provisions. He confirmed that all teaching and regional hospitals have been connected to the Mahama Care software platform.
The second session of the 10th Congregation underscored UHAS’ mission of practical training, research and community service. With its growing alumni base, the University continues to produce competent and compassionate healthcare professionals dedicated to serving Ghana and beyond.

UHAS, ICARS and MoH Launch Landmark Project to Combat Neonatal Infections
The University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS), in collaboration with the International Centre for Antimicrobial Resistance Solutions (ICARS) and Ghana’s Ministry of Health (MoH), has launched a groundbreaking research initiative to tackle neonatal infections and antibiotic resistance in the Volta Region. The official launch took place on Thursday, May 7, 2026, at the UHAS Main Campus in Ho.
The Principal Investigator of the Project, Dr. Kokou Amegan-Aho, a Senior Lecturer at UHAS School of Medicine, highlighted the urgency, stating that up to 60% of neonates admitted to intensive care units may suffer infections, with about three out of four infections acquired in healthcare facilities and resistant strains of Klebsiella and E. coli leaving first-line treatments ineffective. He related, among other things that, that the project, as a solution, seeks to reduce neonatal infections by 20% across four hospitals.
The initiative, titled Enhancing Infection Prevention and Rational Antibiotic Use for Neonatal Infection in Four Health Facilities in the Volta Region, Ghana, will strengthen Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) and Antimicrobial Stewardship (AMS) practices at facility level; Implement five interconnected work packages covering diagnostics, behavioural change, economic evaluation, and policy; Progress through three phases - baseline assessment, co-creation with facility staff and implementation with evaluation.
Participating hospitals include Ho Teaching Hospital, Volta Regional Hospital (Hohoe), Margaret Marquart Catholic Hospital (Kpando) and Keta Municipal Hospital.
The Vice Chancellor of UHAS, Prof. Lydia Aziato praised the multidisciplinary collaboration and urged similar partnerships across UHAS.
Speaking on behalf of Prof. Frank Edwin, the Pro-Vice Chancellor of UHAS, Prof. Kwame Ohene Buabeng, Dean of UHAS School of Pharmacy, emphasized alignment with Ghana’s National Antimicrobial Stewardship Strategy, calling the project a flagship of national relevance.
Prof. Evelyn Ansah of UHAS Centre for Malaria Research at UHAS Institute of Health Research (IHR) urged participants to uphold principles of collaboration over competition, quality over speed and impact over output.
Echoes of support were received from partners during the launch programme: ICARS Science Officer Fabian Augusto Maza Arnedo described the project as a model of ICARS’ combined top-down and bottom-up approach; WHO’s George Hedidor confirmed WHO’s role on the Steering Committee, calling the methodology “precisely the approach WHO advocates.”; UNICEF, Ghana Health Service and Volta Regional Directorate of Health Services pledged commitment, while hospital representatives stressed sustainability beyond the funding period.
The core management team of the project includes Dr. Matilda Aberese-Ako (Director of the Centre for Malaria Research at UHAS Institute of Health Research) and Prof. Buabeng, supported by experts in Infection Control, AMS, Behavioural Science, Economics and Policy. Oversight will be provided by a steering committee featuring Prof. Evelyn Ansah and Prof. Margaret Gyapong (Professor of Applied Health Social Science and Global Health at the Centre for Health Policy at UHAS-IHR).
If successful, the initiative could serve as a replicable model for integrated infection prevention, antimicrobial stewardship and diagnostic strengthening across Ghana and the wider sub-Saharan region.
