SIX REASONS FOR PURSUING CAPT. MAM's KILLERS

I am usually not a prolific writer but I believe a very good cause has made this situation an exception. A great pain in my heart has compelled me to put forward this piece.
I grew up in Teshie, a notorious and until recently, a pure Ga community along the coast of Accra. Growing up in the early 80s, lynching of suspected or alleged criminals was not uncommon. I can boldly say this barbaric act permeates other communities in Ghana as well. The death of Capt. Maxwell Adam Mahama by the hands of residence of Denkyira Obuasi in the Central Region of Ghana has generated a lot of public debate on both the social and traditional media. There are those who think the perpetrators should not be treated with any mercy whereas others are calling for clemency. Some people even go to the extent of empathizing with the situation of the perpetrators advancing the argument that anybody or community that has suffered consistent attacks from armed robbery will do same. Truth of the matter is that, these things had been happening day in and out at several places in the country and sometimes in different forms.
My take is not to align with any of the two aforementioned school of thoughts of the subject under review, but rather advance another twist to the issue. My simple take; THE LAWS OF THE STATE MUST BE ENFORCED TO THE VERY LATTER. In doing so, it must be with NO FEAR of the military nor FAVOUR to the people.
The following are my reasons;

1. Almost every sensitive governmental, security and law enforcement agencies have fallen victim to some amount of public abuse in recent times. Two years ago, the life of the then sitting President, John Dramani Mahama was threatened and he nearly met his death by the hand of a young man who admitted that would have killed the first gentleman of the land, had he (the president) been to church on that fateful day. Some few months back, another young man succeeded in murdering in cold blood, a sitting member of parliament in his (the MP) own house. Just recently a court of competent jurisdiction was shockingly ransacked in Kumasi and till now the general public is not furnished with full details of the status of that matter. Within this same week, the police have suffered multiple attacks at different areas in the country. As if that is not enough, the people of Denkyira Obuasi has wet the ground with the innocent blood of a military man. How many more agencies are we waiting to be touched before we wake up?

2. Prior to the 2016 presidential election which saw our president, H.E. Nana Addo Danquah Akkufo Addo's landslide victory, one cardinal propaganda projected by the ruling NDC about the then candidate Nana was that, he (Nana Addo) is a violent man. I believe with all sincerity that it was nothing more than a political capital to soil the reputation and image of the obvious incoming president. This was employed to see if it could turn the inevitable defeat of the Mahama government. As fate will have it, it didn't work. Unfortunately, these recent happenings, unlikely linked as they may be, are excellent grounds to fuel further momentum into that allegation if nothing is done. Swift movement in addressing this matter is of great essence.

3. People who are not so enthused about what has happened are having indifference stance for so many reasons. Some are listed below:
I) the captain is not the first ever innocent victim to have suffered this ordeal. People are mistakenly lynched everyday just by the shout of "JULOR OO JULOR, "EYWI OO EYWI", "FIEVITOR OO FIEVITOR" and nothing much is seen to be done about it. I recently witnessed a similar one at the most unlikely of places, a school. Now that one of the security body had fallen victim to this canker, an entire town is placed under siege.
II) people usually don't trust our police and court system and hence they are reluctant in presenting apprehended armed robbers or even petty thieves for prosecution. Rather they prefer to take the law into their own hands and resort to mob or instant justice. This is because when criminals are handed over to the appropriate agencies for prosecution, not much is seen to be done and in a short while they are released back into the community and of course "alluta continua".
III) some allegation against the late captain too is that, why must he carry a pistol with him if truly he was on a normal jogging exercise? If it was not just jogging exercise but on an undercover operation, why didn't he go with some men under his command? Well he is not here to answer for himself.
IV) perhaps the most unsubstantiated point but nonetheless making the public view is that, some security officials, be it the police or military, are themselves culprits. It is alleged that some of them embark on armed robbery or better still lend out their weapons to criminals to undertake the act. And for these reasons and more, a section of the general public express some amount of reservations to what has happened.

4. Well, Ghanaians who have lived longer than myself in this country will agree with me that the final outcome of incurring the displeasure of the Armed Forces is not a situation any civilized community or nation for that matter, will like to witness, especially in this part of the world where there are countless examples to site. I will not belabour this point any further for obvious reasons.

5. Also, the town of Denkyira Obuasi is made up of many lovely people I believe, most of whom did not take any part in the barbaric act. As it stand now, report coming from the place makes us understand that activities in the town and even neighbouring ones have come to a halt. This is due to the rounding up of residents of the town for investigations by the security forces, coupled with the heavy military presence in the town. This means productivity is imprisoned until further notice. Of course if this situation is allowed to persist, the overall victim will be the national purse.

6. Lastly, this present a fine opportunity to make a strong case against instant or mob justice on suspected or alleged criminals. A strong statement of legal action should be made from this unfortunate death so that at least the captain's death will give us something to celebrate for in the future. If appropriate actions are taken on this particular issue, it could as well be a cure to this malice that had been with us long before I was born.

In conclusion, I would say that, I think it's about time that the WHEELS OF JUSTICE is seen grinding a bit FASTER, FAIRER and VISIBLY. This I believe will inspire confidence in the general public towards the law enforcement agencies, and will also serve as deterrent for any future reoccurrences.
