On October 28, 2024, the global finals and award ceremony of the 17th Chinese Bridge Competition for High Schools was held in Tianjin-China.

This year, 181 primary and secondary school contestants from 102 countries gathered in Beijing and Tianjin for a grand celebration of Chinese language learning and cultural exchange. Over a period of 15 days filled with competitions and cultural activities, contestants explored iconic landmarks in China, including the Great Wall, the Summer Palace, the Forbidden City, and Tiananmen Square (PR Newswire).

Margaret Ankomah Amoabeng, a student at the Confucius Institute at the University of Cape Coast's Confucius Classroom at the University Practice Senior High School (UPSHS), Cape Coast made history by becoming the first Ghanaian to compete at the finals after winning the Ghana edition in May this year. At the event, she made CIUCC, UCC and Ghana proud by receiving the " Outstanding performance award".

Margaret's achievement is a testament to the benefits of learning Chinese. Chinese language is offered tuition free at the CIUCC, take a step and enroll yourself or your ward and enjoy the boundless opportunities.

On the evening of September 20, the Chinese Embassy in Ghana held a reception to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China and welcome the new Chinese Ambassador, Tong Defa. The President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Akufo Addo attended the reception. The Confucius Institute at UCC(CIUCC) was represented by the Directors and Teachers and met with the Ambassador.
At the reception, Ambassador Tong Defa introduced the achievements of the Third Plenary Session of the 20th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) in his speech, emphasizing that since the founding of the People's Republic of China 75 years ago, it has always adhered to the people-centered development philosophy, closely integrated with the world, and achieved a series of remarkable developmental targets, which have contributed to global economic growth, brought opportunities to international investors, provided impetus for sustainable development, and attracted the international community to cast a valuable vote of confidence in China's development prospects.

Ambassador Tong introduced the significance and main achievements of the 2024 Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), pointing out that China has always adhered to the principle of sincerity in developing its relations with Africa and the correct concept of justice and shared interests and Africa has always been the priority development direction of China's diplomacy. President Xi Jinping proposed the Belt and Road Initiative, the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative, and the Global Civilization Initiative. No country will be left behind in the process of world modernization! Ambassador Tong said that China-Ghana cooperation has a solid foundation and broad prospects. The two countries have deepened political mutual trust, increased close economic and trade ties, growing investment in Ghana, and many bright spots in people-to-people and cultural exchanges. “As the new ambassador to Ghana, I feel that my mission is glorious and my responsibility is heavy, and I am willing to do my best to actively promote the implementation of the outcomes of the summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) and deepen practical cooperation between China and Ghana in various fields for the benefit of the two peoples,” the Ambassador said.
It is believed that the two countries will open a new chapter in building a Ghana-China community with a shared future for common development and modernization! The reception was warm and friendly, and guests discussed cooperation and expressed sincere wishes for the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.

UCC (CIUCC) Student Wins 2nd Prize in Global Chinese Bridge Finals

On September 2, 2024, the global finals of the 23rd “Chinese Bridge” competition were held in China.

Over the past 23 years, the “Chinese Bridge” competition has attracted over 1.7 million young participants from over 160 countries. The competition has enabled international students to learn Chinese, immerse themselves in Chinese culture, and build bridges of friendship.

This year, the competition drew 147 contestants and 122 observers from 133 countries and territories to the global finals in China.

Miss Lilian Tobia, a final year UCC student studying Chinese at the Confucius Institute at UCC(CIUCC) represented Ghana, having won the national finals at the University of Ghana in June this year.

During the global finals, Miss Tobias qualified for the final 30, where contestants demonstrated Chinese language and cultural ability through speech contests and performances, Chinese and local. Contestants were also treated to tours and exchange activities, meeting peers from all corners of the Globe.

At the end of the intense competition, she won the 2ND PRIZE. Miss Tobis was also among the top 5 most famous contestants according to votes.

Besides the prize received, Miss Tobias has access to scholarships and several other opportunities. Her standard has become an inspiration for all students to start studying the Chinese Language at CIUCC(tuition-free, become ambassadors of China-Ghana friendship, live their dreams, and bring honor to UCC and mother Ghana.

KEDA (GH) Ceramics Co., Ltd holds opening ceremony for the 3rd phase of Chinese language Courses.

KEDA (GH) Ceramics Co., Ltd is a Chinese multinational corporation located in Takoradi specializing in tiles and ware. KEDA is one of CIUCC's most important and supportive partners. The company has partnered with the Institute for programs such as the Chinese Ambassador Awards Ceremony, Spring Festival Gala, and welcome ceremony for the Education Delegation from Hunan Province. KEDA also offers employment, national service, and internship opportunities for CIUCC graduates and students.
In terms of Chinese Language Education, KEDA is one of our 14 teaching sites. At KEDA, CIUCC offers Chinese language proficiency courses to workers who want to improve their Chinese language communication skills, get better-paid positions, apply for scholarships for further studies, and take part in summer camps in China.

On Thursday, September 5, 2024 the Company held its opening ceremony for phase 3 of Chinese Language courses for employee students. In attendance were Mr. Liwei, the Managing Director of KEDA and other officers of the company, the China Director of CIUCC CIUCC administrators, teachers, and workers studying Chinese.

On April 8, 2024, the Confucius Institute at the University of Cape Coast, in partnership with the Central Regional Coordinating Council (CRCC), the Central Regional Education Office organized this year's International Chinese Day with a focus on girl child education and empowerment at the Holy Child School, Cape Coast.

The Central Regional Director of Education, Mr. Emmanuel Essuman was particularly supportive of the event, and his office has liaised with CIUCC to cooperate.

Last year, an MOU was signed between the Ministries of Education of China and Ghana to introduce Chinese to the curriculum of high schools in Ghana. A handful of schools have been selected for the pilot program. On September 3, 2024, the Director visited the Confucius Institute to discuss introducing Chinese language education to schools in the Central Region. He held consultations with the China Director, Prof. OU Yamei, and looked forward to implementing Chinese language Education across schools in the Region.

Shen Lihong from the UN Security Advisory Visits CIUCC

On August 21, 2024, Shen Lihong from the United Nations Security Council Security Advisory visited the Confucius Institute at the University of Cape Coast. She was welcomed by the Directors and staff of the Institute and was given a tour of the Institute. During exchanges, she praised the Institute for its achievements.

Madam Shen is the only Chinese national on the UN Security Advisory and her visit was a great honor to the Institute, adding to the number of illustrious persons to visit the Institute. Last month, staff from the International Department of the People's Daily, including the Editor-In-Chief chose CIUCC as one of the sole Confucius Institute in Ghana to visit.

Recently, CIUCC has achieved great success, including winning both the 17th Chinese Bridge for High Schools and the 23rd Chinese Bridge for University Category. Miss Lilian Tobias is currently competing in the global finals in China and has qualified for the final 30.

At the Health Community of West Africa (HCOWA) Industrial Expo held in August 2024, CIUCC won the Best Performance Award, and Prof. OU Yamei, the China Director, won the Outstanding Charity Ambassador Award.

CIUCC Win Awards at the 2024 HCOWA West Africa Medical Industry Investment Summit and Expo.

The Health Community of West Africa (HCOWA) is an advocacy group dedicated to working with stakeholders in the health industry to champion health in Ghana and West Africa.

From August 24 to 28, 2024, HCOWA held its West Africa Medical Industry Investment Summit and Expo in Accra.
The Confucius Institute at the University of Cape Coast(CIUCC) played a crucial role in organizing the summit. During a dinner on the 24th, CIUCC China and Ghana Directors gave speeches, and the CIUCC Martial Arts Team performed for the guests. From the 26th to the 28th, CIUCC mounted its exhibition stand, and CIUCC students also assisted various companies with exhibition assignments.

At the Dinner Awards held on August 28th, CIUCC received the award for best performance, and the China Director, Prof. OU Yamei received the Outstanding Charity Ambassador Award.

As CIUCC continues to soar and impact lives, all are invited to learn Chinese language and culture at the Institute for free and be part of the CIUCC family.

CIUCC Welcomes Delegation from Hunan Provincial Association for the Promotion of China -Africa Economic and Trade Cooperation, HCOWA and Sichuan Medical Association.

On August 27, 2024, the Confucius Institute at the University of Cape Coast (CIUCC) welcomed delegations from Hunan Provincial Association for the Promotion of China -Africa Economic and Trade Cooperation (CATP), the Sichuan (China) Medical Association, and the Ghana Chinese Chamber of Commerce .
The team paid a courtesy call on the Central Regional Minister and the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast and also visited several hospitals in Cape Coast. After the visitation, CIUCC organized a welcome ceremony for the delegation at the Nana Jane Opoku-Agyemang Auditorium. They enjoyed dazzling martial arts and other Chinese cultural performances by CIUCC students. In his welcome remarks, the Ghana Director of CIUCC emphasized the important role Chinese enterprises have played in the growth of the Institute. Mr. Xu Xianping, President of CATP, in his speech, praised the brilliance of CIUCC students upon witnessing the performances and praised the laurels achieved by the Institute.
President Xu donated 50 computers to the Institute, and Mr. Chen Junhao, Founder of the Builders Alliance also made donations to students of the University Practice Senior High School. The Alliance also discussed providing a better lighting system for the Nana Jane Opoku-Agyemang Auditorium. CIUCC Directors, in return, presented the guests with UCC at 60 paraphernalia and Citations.

The visit highlights the importance of CIUCC to UCC and Ghana. Since its inception eight years ago, CIUCC has seen tremendous growth and success stories. Besides serving as a bridge for China -Africa friendship, the Institute has been instrumental in academia, bringing the Chinese cultural experience to Ghanaians, linking students to internship, national service, and job opportunities, championing Chinese language education in Ghana, promoting exchanges between UCC and Chinese entities such as HCOWA, CATP, the Ghana Chinese Chamber of Commerce, Chinese Universities and diplomatic missions.

CHINSA End of YEAR Dinner

On Friday 16 August 2024, the Chinese Students Association (CHINSA) held its annual end of year dinner at Oguaa Roof Top. In attendance were Directors, Administrators, Lecturers and students of the Institute and other departments. The programme served as a great avenue for students to socialize, appreciate outgoing executives, usher in new executives and bid farewell to our final year students. The event also saw the students receiving cash prizes and certificates for the Chinese Ambassador Awards.

Poly Changda, a Chinese MNC visits CIUCC

Poly Changda Engineering is one of the most widely known Chinese multinational corporations. The company specializes in project investment, design, maintenance, and the construction of ports, municipal projects, and rail transit. Maintaining a strong presence in Ghana, the company is expanding its operations to establish a base in Cape Coast.

On August 16, 2024, the General Manager and Human Resource Manager visited CIUCC and held business discussions regarding opportunities for cooperation in areas such as student internship, national service, and employment opportunities.

CIUCC's success story has made it a viable cooperative partner, and Poly Changda's partnership will further provide opportunities for students of UCC and beyond.

Chinese Bridge Winner Flies to China

This year, Margeret Amoabeng, a student at the Institute, won the grand prize for the 17th Chinese Bridge Competition for senior high schools and Lilian Tobias won the grand prize for the 23rd Chinese Bride Competition for University student category. This means our students will be representing Ghana in the global finals in China

On 14th August 2024 Miss Tobias flew to China to compete with champions from the rest of the Globe in the university category.
