Bongo SHS Establishes Maize Farm Under the School Farms Initiative (SFI)

The Headmaster, management, Agriculture Department, staff, and students of Bongo Senior High School, under the School Farms Initiative (SFI), have established a maize farm at the Oncho Freed Zone in the Bongo District.

The school has received tremendous support from the District Chief Executive (DCE), Member of Parliament (MP), and the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA). The DCE, Hon. Joseph Akansake, together with the Chief Internal Auditor, the MoFA Director, the District Information Service, and a section of the school management, inspected the farm, participated in activities, and addressed students during their practical session on Wednesday, 22nd October 2025.

In his remarks, the DCE emphasized the immense contribution of agriculture to national development and underscored the need for learners to receive holistic education that combines theory with practical experience.

While the Bongo SHS farms are aspiring to win the Best District Farmer Award, the school remains committed to expanding and sustaining the initiative in the coming years, with continued support from stakeholders.

The School Farms Initiative (SFI) forms part of the Presidential Initiatives in Agriculture and Agribusiness (PIAA) in Ghana. Specifically, under the “Feed Ghana” pillar of the PIAA, the SFI seeks to establish farms in senior high schools (and school-based gardens in basic schools) across the country.

The objectives of the initiative are to:

Cultivate school-based farmland for staple crops and other produce.

Provide students with experiential, practical skills in agriculture and agribusiness.

Reduce government expenditure on school feeding by using produce from school farms (or nearby) to supply schools.

On day 5, May 9, 2025 of the Essential Values for Ghanaian Youth handbook training, the relevance of essential values such as honesty, responsibility, and leadership was emphasized as crucial to shaping disciplined, morally upright Ghanaian youth, especially in light of the growing trend of indiscipline among them. The introduction of the Values Handbook is timely, serving as a vital tool to address the declining appreciation of Ghanaian values. Throughout the week, students demonstrated a strong understanding of the values, actively participated in all activities, and showed notable growth in facilitation and leadership skills. The school community is fully prepared and eager to implement the VLC programme in the coming weeks. We sincerely thank GES and T-TEL for this impactful initiative and affirm our collective commitment; management, staff, and students, to ensure its successful implementation.

On Tuesday, May 6, at Bongos Senior High School, a thoughtful discussion took place during the Essential Values Training which centered around responsible citizenship, honesty, integrity, and other crucial values significant to Ghanaian society. The lively enthusiasm and evident excitement in the faces of the learners underscored the importance of implementing a value-based learning community (VLC) . Such an initiative is expected to greatly benefit not just the Bongo community but also contribute positively to the nation as a whole. Learners were engaged and inspired, highlighting how these values are vital in nurturing informed and conscientious citizens.

Radio Discussion on "Orange the World: Stop Sexual Harassment and Gender-Based Violence" at Bongo Community Radio

Students, the Entertainment Master, the Guidance and Counseling Coordinator, and the Senior House Mistress participated in the discussion, addressing these global challenges within the local context. The aim was to sensitize the school community and the broader Bongo community.

The 16-day campaign concluded successfully, but the fight against this menace continues unabated through various initiatives, including jingles broadcast via the school siren, recitations at all public school events, and numerous other planned activities.

*Day 16*
Bongo Senior High School successfully concluded our campaign against Sexual Harassment and Gender-Based Violence with a vibrant Durbar in the Bongo Community. This event was held in partnership with UNFPA, Obaapa Foundation, and the leadership of the Bongo Traditional Area, including the Paramount Chief, Paramount Queen Mother, Sub-chiefs, and elders. Additionally, we were joined by representatives from selected basic schools across the district.
During the Durbar, we engaged the community in raising awareness about the importance of standing against sexual harassment and gender-based violence—issues that often lead to teenage pregnancies and early marriages. The event received coverage from media outlets such as GBC, A1 Radio, and Word FM, who were present to document and broadcast the proceedings.

12/12/2024

To raise greater awareness about sexual harassment and promote a safe environment conducive to academic excellence within the Bongo Senior High School community, a jingle was created and regularly broadcast.
