*Montessori education* is a teaching method created by Dr. Maria Montessori, an Italian doctor, over 100 years ago.

The core idea: *“Follow the child.”* Kids learn best when they’re free to explore, make choices, and learn at their own pace.

*The 5 Key Principles of Montessori*

*1. Child-Led Learning*
Instead of the teacher lecturing everyone, children choose what activity to work on. The classroom has learning "stations" and the child picks what interests them.

*2. Prepared Environment*
Classrooms look different. Low shelves, child-sized tables/chairs, real materials. Everything is organized and accessible so kids can work independently without asking an adult for help every 2 minutes.

*3. Hands-On Materials*
No worksheets in early years. Kids use special Montessori materials made of wood/fabric to learn concepts.
Ex: Beads to learn math, sandpaper letters to learn reading, pouring water to develop coordination. They learn by touching and doing.

*4. Mixed Age Groups*
A class is usually 3-6 years old together, or 6-9 together. Older kids teach younger ones. Younger kids learn by watching older ones. This builds independence and leadership.

*5. Respect + Independence*
Teachers are called "guides." They observe, then step in to show how to use a material, then step back. The goal is to raise kids who can think for themselves, solve problems, and manage their own time.

*What a Montessori Day Looks Like*
1. *3-hour work cycle*: Kids choose work, focus deeply, clean up, then choose something else
2. *No grades/tests in early years*: Progress is tracked by observation
3. *Practical life skills*: Pouring, buttoning, sweeping, cooking. These build concentration and coordination
4. *Subjects are connected*: Math materials connect to geography which connects to science

*Benefits for Children*
- *Independence*: They learn to do things for themselves
- *Focus + Concentration*: Long work periods build attention span
- *Love of Learning*: Because they choose it, they’re curious not forced
- *Social skills*: Mixed ages teach patience, helping, conflict resolution
- *Strong foundation*: Especially in math and language because materials make abstract ideas concrete

*Common Criticisms*
1. Can be expensive - real Montessori materials cost a lot
2. Less structure - some kids need more direction
3. Limited group activities/sports in pure Montessori

*Montessori vs Traditional School*
**Traditional** **Montessori**
**Teacher role** Instructor Guide / Observer
**Classroom** Desks in rows Tables, stations, freedom to move
**Learning** Whole class, same lesson Individual/small group, child chooses
**Assessment** Tests, grades Observation, portfolios
**Goal** Academic results Independence + love of learning
*Age Levels*
- *Nido*: 0-18 months
- *Toddler*: 18 months - 3 years
- *Primary/Casa*: 3-6 years - this is the most popular
- *Elementary*: 6-12 years
- *Adolescent*: 12-18 years

*Bottom line*: Montessori isn’t about making kids "smart faster." It’s about raising independent, confident, curious kids who know how to learn on their own.

Note:...
Having a Cambridge certificate in Ghana is a big advantage* — whether you're a teacher, student, or planning to open your own school.

Here’s how it works specifically for Ghana:

*1. For Teachers — Higher Pay & Better Jobs*

- *Top international schools hire only Cambridge-trained*: GIS, Galaxy, Lincoln Community, Association International, British International, The Roman Ridge — all run Cambridge IGCSE/A-Level. They pay *GHS 6,000 - 15,000* vs *GHS 1,500 - 3,000* in regular private schools.
- *Exams marking jobs*: Cambridge pays teachers to mark IGCSE/A-Level scripts. Extra income $600 - $2,000 per session.
- *Consultant work*: Private schools in Accra/Kumasi pay you to train their teachers or set up Cambridge programs.
- *Easier to get UAE/UK jobs*: If you ever want to return to UAE, Cambridge certificate is recognized instantly by KHDA schools.

*2. For Opening Your Own School / Bread Business + School Idea*

This is huge in Ghana right now.
