CAPE COAST METROPOLITAN ASSEMBLY SET TO MAKE THE WEARING OF FACE MASK MANDATORY

The President after lifting the restrictions on movement in Accra, Greater Kumasi and Kasoa in his 7th address to the nation on the progress made on the fight against the novel COVID-19, encouraged citizens to use face mask to protect themselves and others from getting the virus.

In line with this, wearing of face mask in Accra and Kumasi Metropolitan Assemblies have been made compulsory for people living in the regions to help reduce the spread of the Corona Virus.

In an interview with Mr. Richmond Yaw Yeboah who is the Public Relations Officer of Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly, he disclosed on the 'Good Morning Cape Coast Show' to Nana Kojo Amoasi on Cape 93.3 FM that, the assembly after a meeting today, 24th April, 2020 will make the wearing of face mask mandatory in the Metropolis.

When asked whether the assembly will provide face masks free for everyone in the Metropolis, he explained that there are over 200,000 people in the Metropolis and as a result the assembly cannot provide face masks free for everyone. However, he added that the assembly will provide some for free to the poor and vulnerable in the Metropolis.

This directive according to Mr. Richmond Yaw Yeboah will take effect from Monday, 27th April, 2020 and anyone who refuses to comply with this directive would be made to face the law.

This iniative from the assembly will no doubt help in the fight against the COVID-19.

CAPE COAST METROPOLIS AND KEEA MUNICIPALITY RECORD 7 CONFIRMED CASES

Central Region has recorded seven new cases of COVID 19 with patients showing no symptoms at all.

According to the deputy director of health in charge of Public health in Central Region, Dr. Kwabena Sarpong who spoke in an exclusive interview with Osahene Kwame Dapaah on Kingdom Fm 96.9 in Cape Coast on the Morning bell, out of the 561 people tested, 238 had negative result and 318 results are yet to be received. 7 of the cases are made up of 3 females and 4 males.

He added that,5 of the confirmed persons have been quarantined in their homes in Cape Coast and KEEA with the other 2 in the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital receiving treatment.

Responding to whether, Cape Coast should have a barrier to test people entering and leaving Cape Coast, he said, the emphasis should rather be on testing rather than lockdown entirely that will cripple businesses.

He advised people in Central Region to stop the numerous demonstrations and stigmatization of treated patients insisting that is the only way people will own up for the test else people will coil into their shells and affect others.

Ghana has currently recorded 1042 cases with the Central Region alone recording 7 cases

TOURISM GROWTH IN THE ERA OF COVID-19

Tourism, before the novel COVID-19, was one of the world’s largest industries and one of the fastest growing economic sectors, with the tourism industry's contribution to global GDP and jobs accounting to 10.4%. Tourism before now had become a significant source of foreign exchange revenue for many countries in the world, including some least developed countries and developing economies.
The consistent trend of growth in tourism in terms of contribution to GDP, foreign exchange earnings, total tourist receipts, growth of restaurants, and travel and tour operators was encouraging.

However, tourism growth globally has been affected hugely by this pandemic as most countries have closed down their borders. Being the gateway to countries, airports are one of the major entry points for tourists into countries. The implications of this closure is that, tourism activities in countries have now become standstill as governments across the globe are putting in efforts to contain the spread of the virus, with a typical example being the postponement of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic games by the Japanese government and the International Olympic Committee.
With preparations for the Games already costing at least £10bn, postponement of the Games to 2021 has been one of the major hits to tourism growth.

Not only would participants be affected by the turnout of events, but businesses like hospitality facilities, airline companies and other tourism facilities would be the ones at the losing end most. In Ghana for instance, the Cape Coast Castle which is a World Heritage Monument Site as well as the number one income generator to the country with regard to receipts from tourism attractions in 2019, have been shut down because of the pandemic.

The viral outbreak had forced countries to implement travel bans and restrictions and airlines have also been forced to significantly slash flights. The airline industry is facing its biggest crisis since the September 11 attacks in the United States, with several airlines on the brink of collapse.
The World Travel and Tourism Council has warned that, the COVID-19 pandemic could cut 50 million jobs worldwide in the travel and tourism industry and Asia is expected to be the worst affected. Once the outbreak is over, it could take up to 10 months for the industry to recover.

Of the 50 million jobs that could be lost, around 30 million would be in Asia, seven million in Europe, five million in the Americas and the rest in other continents.
According to the World Travel and Tourism Council, the equivalent to a loss of three months of global travel in 2020 could lead to a corresponding reduction in jobs of between 12% and 14%.
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) estimates that global air transport revenues will be reduced by 5% this year, which means $29.3 billion less (about £27,000 million).

TIME WITH A SHE-RO

Her motivation in life as a lady has been her family because, "when you come from a large family and you have several younger siblings, you tend to serve as a mirror they look into. The reflection you give them is what they would adopt", she said.

So as an elderly sister, she could not afford to fail and lead any wayward life especially because of the motivation she got from her mother who is one of the strongest women she has ever seen on earth and because she had a lot of people looking up to her and serving as an icon of change started from home.

Although great achievement is usually born of great sacrifice, and is never the result of selfishness; Just as the starting point of all achievement is desire, there was more to her achievement than one could imagine. For her, without God she simply could not have come this far as the journey was not without challenges. But with a purpose-driven mindset, she was able to focus on her goals.

A typical example of the saying, "there is no limit to what we can accomplish as women", she defied all odds to emerge as the Best Graduating Female Student and the Best Graduating Female Student in Purchasing and Supply Department in the just ended second congregation of CCTU. She never stopped taking her academic work serious despite being the Women's Commissioner of the SRC in the 2018/2019 academic year. She said,
_"Being a student leader was time consuming and I needed to squeeze time for my academic work. The journey was really tough especially when you have the "Do your best in all Syndrome" but with all the struggles and sleepless nights, my efforts and hardwork paid off in my tenure of office as the SRC Women's Commissioner and now it has paid off full as the Award tells it all."_

She hopes to further her studies and continue to be an advocate for the girl child and women. In her final words, she encouraged women especially to never underrate determination as is the key to success and also learn to prioritise their activities by planning their time. To her, if only women could understand that they are more than pretty faces, they can accomplish more than they could imagine in all endeavors.

Miss Mary Kabuki Afadi is one of the trillions of women out there, whose life journey inspires other young women to work hard and for the Campus Journalists Association, no day was better than celebrating her achievement than on the day of WOMEN!

Mr.Attippoe (An Enterpreneaur).

Mr. Kwamena Minta Nyarku (A Lecturer from the University of Cape Coast).

Mrs. Vida Beayi (from the Student Loan Trust Fund, UCC).

Speaking to students present, Mr. Patrick Attipoe gave a presentation concerning "Job creation before and after school". He entreated students to try as much as possible to let little opportunities count in their lives by putting their business ideas, talents and creativity to action. He explained to students the need to leave their comfort zones to achieve success.

Spicing up the event, Mr. Kwamena Minta Nyarku (Raga), also layed much emphasis on enterpreneaurship by encouraging students not to focus too much on the capital before they start their own business. To him, building self trust, discipline, focus and positive network is enough to help students get started.

Rounding up the day, Mrs. Vida Beayi from the Student Loan Trust Fund, UCC also enlightened students on how they can cater for their schooling cost with financial assistance from the Student Loan Trust Fund and start repayment of the loan after two years of completion of their programme of study.

Mr. Bruce Rockson also cautioned students to be very careful with online transactions and entreated students to check the authenticity of brands and the marketers of products before they engage themselves in any transaction owing to the rise in fraudsters all over online duping people. In conclusion, students were encouraged to always think business when they say SOBAMS and think outside the box when they say SOBAMS again.

TIME WITH THE SRC WOMEN'S COMMISSIONER

The course of leading the women front globally, in Ghana and Cape Coast Technical University has always been a priority as women empowerment has become a key tool in making the world a better place for all and for Hon. Bernice Smith from the Department of Secretaryship and Management Studies, living in a "males world" where men are more in higher positions as compared to Ladies irrespective of the capabilities of women informed her
to vie for the position of a Women's Commissioner.

For her, 'knowing that what a man leaves behind is not what is engraved in stone monument but what is engraved into the lives of others', her motivation has always been to help equip Ladies on campus with the needed skills to close this gap with assistance from good and experienced women who have attained enviable hieghts and can equally impact on the lives of Ladies on campus positively.

Hon. Bernice Smith envisions that by the end of her tenure of office, Ladies on campus will get a platform to be empowered to become positive change makers. She hopes to see Ladies of CCTU challenge themselves to become what seem impossible to others. In her interaction with CJA she said,
_'I want to see the Ladies of CCTU not only striving for HND but also a skill that cannot be taken away from them'.
_

As a positive change maker, she is very optimistic about the future because she is hopeful that in the next six (6) months great packages of programmes where everything is on another level will be unveiled to Ladies on campus.

Hon. Bernice Smith in her final words to the student body appealed to students to stick to the paramount reason for which they are on campus, be involved in all activities that is beneficial and never forget the God factor; the very essential reason she believes have brought every student this far.
