The RISE-GHS training workshop on Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) and Bioinformatics brings together public health laboratory staff for a week of practical training in pathogen genomic surveillance.

Participants work through key stages of the sequencing workflow, from sample preparation, PCR and library preparation to sequencing and quality control. The training concludes with a bioinformatics session led by Dr. Collins Moranga, where participants analyse and visualise the sequencing data generated during the lab sessions using EPI2ME.

The workshop strengthens practical skills in genomic surveillance to support public health and outbreak response.

Day 2 of the WACCBIP Research Conference 2026 continued with engaging discussions on health security, immunology, host genetics, climate resilience, antimicrobial resistance, and emerging infectious diseases.
The day opened with a recap of Day 1 by Prof. Peter Kojo Quashie, followed by a keynote by Dr. Ebere Okereke, who called for African bioscience to move beyond discovery towards health sovereignty through equitable partnerships, stronger institutions, and research that delivers lasting public health impact.
Scientific sessions and Fellows' presentations explored immune responses, diagnostics, genomics, women's health, host genetics, and antimicrobial resistance, while poster presentations and turbo talks showcased the breadth of ongoing research across the continent.
Participants also took part in a panel discussion on Addressing Climate Health Resilience in African Bioscience Research, highlighting the need for stronger surveillance systems, climate-informed research, and practical solutions to emerging health challenges.
Day 2 once again demonstrated the strength of African-led science and the value of collaboration in advancing research that improves health across the continent.

Day 1 of the WACCBIP Research Conference 2026 brought together leading scientists, researchers, and emerging investigators for engaging discussions on the future of African bioscience.

Across keynote lectures, plenary sessions, and fellows’ presentations, participants explored key areas shaping infectious disease research, including malaria evolution, molecular diagnostics, genomics, bioinformatics, disease surveillance, therapeutic targets, and drug resistance.

From understanding how pathogens adapt and evade control strategies to developing innovative tools for diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment, the sessions highlighted the power of interdisciplinary research in addressing Africa’s health challenges.

The day also showcased the next generation of scientists, with fellows presenting impactful research that reflects the depth of talent being developed across the continent.

The WACCBIP Research Conference 2026 officially opened with a vibrant ceremony that brought together researchers, students, collaborators, partners, and policymakers from across Ghana and beyond for three days of scientific exchange under the theme, African Bioscience at the Interface of Health, Disease, and Environment.
The opening featured remarks from Prof. Gordon Awandare, Director of WACCBIP; Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana and Chairperson of the Conference; Prof. Yidana Mark Sandow, Provost of the College of Basic and Applied Sciences; Prof. John Owusu Gyapong, Secretary-General of the African Research Universities Alliance (ARUA); Dr. Ben Murton; Dr. Holger Till of GIZ; Prof. Oteng Yeboah, Vice President of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences; Prof. Kirk Deitsch, Chair of the WACCBIP International Advisory Board; Dr. Dennis Chopera of the Science for Africa Foundation; and Special Guest of Honour, Prof. Fred Binka.
Collectively, the speakers celebrated WACCBIP's growing impact in research, training, and innovation while emphasizing the importance of collaboration, scientific excellence, and investing in the next generation of African scientists to address the continent's health and development challenges.
