So, who exactly is a shareholder?

Today, we're answering one of the questions almost every new investor asks:

💰 There are two major ways stocks can potentially put money in an investor's pocket

1️⃣ CAPITAL APPRECIATION 📈

This happens when you buy a stock at a lower price and later sell it at a higher price

Example:

You buy a stock at GH¢5.OO

Later, it trades at GH¢7.OO

That's a potential gain of:

GH¢2.OO PER SHARE

Before considering applicable costs and taxes

If you owned 1OO shares, the difference would be GH¢2OO before applicable costs and taxes assuming you sold at GH¢7.OO

But remember:

📈 The price can rise
📉 The price can also fall

A gain only becomes realized when you actually sell the shares

2️⃣ DIVIDENDS 💰

Some companies may distribute part of their profits to shareholders

This payment is called a dividend

For example, if a company declares a dividend of GH¢O.5O per share and you own 1OO eligible shares, your declared dividend would be:

1OO × GH¢O.5O = GH¢5O

Before any applicable taxes or other considerations

But here's something every beginner should remember:

🚨 DIVIDENDS ARE N0T GUARANTEED

A company may choose not to declare a dividend, even if it made a profit

Don't invest simply because you expect:
