The statement the "First shall be the last,last shall be the first" in (Matthew 20) is not talking about a believer losing his or her salvation. It's so unfortunate many religious churches has abused this verse and use it as a weapon to manipulate and put fear in their members to control them.

Now "But he answered one of them, and said, Friend, I do thee no wrong: didst not thou agree with me for a penny?
Take that thine is, and go thy way: I will give unto this last, even as unto thee.
Is it not lawful for me to do what I will with mine own? Is thine eye evil, because I am good? So the last shall be first, and the first last: for many be called, but few chosen" (Matt. 20:13-16)

This was a parable from Jesus, parables has a fact, a fiction and a lesson in it. So in a parable you don't look for the fact or the fiction, you look for the LESSON that is being communicated. So what was the lesson Jesus communicated? Every parable of Jesus was about him, Every of his parable was about himself, because Jesus was among the people that lacked understanding of who he was. So he used every parable to try to make them know that the Messiah you're looking for has arrived, that the person you're waiting for is here.

That's the essence of all the parables of Jesus. So when he gave that parable, when he talked about "first shall be the last, last shall be first" What he was talking about the Pharisees and the Sadducees who has been observing the Law of Moses all their life and Jesus came yet they didn't know he has come, they never recognise or believe in him, instead the Gentiles, the outcast who didn't know even the Torah, they didn't know the Old Testament yet they have embraced Jesus and they were embracing what he was teaching and they were believing in him.

So when he was talking about "first and last, last and first" It doesn't mean he doesn't give grace to everybody, or he has chosen those that will be saved, No. He was referring to the law keepers
