Key Facts about H.E. Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang and University of Cape Coast (UCC):
• In 1977, she graduated from UCC with a B.A. (Hons.) in English and French, along with a concurrent Diploma in Education.
• In 1986, she was appointed Lecturer at UCC and rose through the academic ranks to become a Full Professor in 2006.
Leadership Roles at UCC :
She broke several gender barriers at the university, becoming:
• The first woman Head of the Department of English
• The first woman Dean of the Faculty of Arts
• The first woman Dean of the School of Graduate Studies
• The Founding Dean of the School of Graduate Studies and Research, a position she held until September 2008
• The first female Vice-Chancellor of a public university in Ghana when she was appointed Vice-Chancellor of UCC
Institutional Growth During Her Tenure as Vice-Chancellor
During her tenure, UCC experienced significant institutional expansion and infrastructural development, including:
• Establishment of the Oil and Gas Institute
• Establishment of the Faculty of Law
• Establishment of a Crèche at the University Pre-School
• Establishment of the Amissah-Arthur Language Centre
• Expansion of the University Printing Press
• Completion of the Faculty of Education Lecture Theatre Complex
• Completion of the Diagnostic Centre at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital
• Rehabilitation of laboratories at the Technology Village of the School of Agriculture, with support from the Ministry of Food and Agriculture
• Commencement of construction of a Training and Resource Centre for the College of Distance Education at Agona Nyakrom
• Her tenure also enhanced the university’s international visibility, with increased collaboration between UCC and other institutions of higher learning around the world.
Recognition
• In 2026, the University of Cape Coast conferred on her the Distinguished Fellow Award in recognition of her tireless advocacy for equity and the rights of women, children, and marginalized groups, as well as her outstanding contributions to academia, governance, leadership, and education policy implementation.
• Her current role as Vice President of the Republic of Ghana represents a historic achievement, making her one of the most distinguished alumni of the University of Cape Coast, a leading university in Ghana, West Africa, and Africa.
