1- German spelling is quite reliably representative of sound almost every written symbol is pronounced, except an H which is only a sign of length after vowels.
2 - Most consonants are pronounced in similar way to their English equivalents.The following are exceptions :
V = English f . Vogel,von,vor
W = English v. Was, wasser, wort, wind.
Z = English ts. Zu, zwei, zimmer, katze.
