The Faculty of Applied Sciences at Accra Technical University has held a two-day seminar and workshop aimed at strengthening faculty engagement, improving academic processes, and enhancing institutional performance.

The programme, held at the ATU FlexLab from 2–3 June 2026, brought together academic and administrative staff for capacity building, knowledge sharing, and discussions on faculty development.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Dean of the Faculty, Prof. Nana Yaw Asabere, stressed the importance of continuous improvement, regular academic reviews, and stronger institutional partnerships to support teaching, research, and innovation.

A guest scholar from the University of Johannesburg, Prof. Oluwafemi Adebo, highlighted the need to increase research output, strengthen academic collaborations, and improve institutional visibility through innovation and research.

The workshop also reviewed the Faculty’s performance, revealing a student population of 7,361, 183 academic staff, five academic departments, 57 high-impact publications, and eight master's programmes.

Participants were encouraged to leverage digital platforms such as Microsoft Teams to support teaching, training, and administration.

Other sessions focused on academic promotion procedures, staff development pathways, and institutional support systems, with presentations led by Prof. George Osei-Adjei and Prof. Felix Abekah Botchway.

Participants described the workshop as timely and insightful, noting that it provided practical guidance on academic progression, performance improvement, and digital transformation within the University.

In line with its commitment to innovation and continuous improvement, the University organised a two-day Artificial Intelligence (AI) training programme for administrative staff to enhance productivity and operational efficiency.

Held from 28–29 May 2026, the training brought together staff from various departments and units to build their capacity to apply AI tools in administrative work. The programme was facilitated by technology and digital transformation expert Dr. David King Boison, with support from Ms. Shanna Takrama.

Participants were introduced to the Virtual Productivity Framework (VPF), an AI-powered ecosystem designed to improve productivity, communication, research, workflow management, and digital collaboration. The training also covered several AI platforms within the VPF ecosystem, including Nyame Mind, Nyame Nexus, Mantix, Bio-Sankofa, Obibini, and VPF-Edu360.

A key feature of the programme was hands-on training in AI prompt engineering, where participants learned how to effectively interact with AI systems to support tasks such as document preparation, content generation, data analysis, research, and institutional communication.

Speaking during the sessions, Dr. Boison highlighted the growing role of AI in modern administration, noting that universities must adopt emerging technologies to remain efficient and globally competitive.

Participants described the training as timely and practical, expressing confidence that the knowledge gained would improve their productivity and help them adapt to evolving technological trends in higher education administration.

This initiative reflects ATU’s ongoing commitment to innovation, capacity building, and integrating technology into its administrative operations.

Accra Technical University has secured funding under China’s National Key Research and Development Programme to establish the China–Ghana Joint Laboratory for Food Security and Storage in partnership with local and international research institutions.
The project brings together researchers from ATU, the University of Cape Coast, Jimei University, Jiangsu University, and Sinograin Chengdu Storage Research Institute Co., Ltd.
The initiative seeks to improve grain quality and reduce post-harvest losses by developing advanced storage technologies suited to Ghana’s environmental conditions.
The joint laboratory will focus on practical and affordable innovations, including intelligent grain-monitoring systems, early-warning pest and mold tools, improved grain preservation methods, and big data systems for grain safety monitoring. The project will target grains such as maize, rice, and sorghum.
As part of the project, demonstration sites, including one in Ghana, will be established to test and refine the technologies under real-life conditions while working closely with farmers and grain storage operators.
The initiative is also expected to strengthen research and human resource capacity in Ghana by training researchers and students in modern grain storage and post-harvest management techniques. Selected students from ATU are expected to benefit from scholarship opportunities to pursue postgraduate studies in China. Ghanaian researchers involved in the project will also undertake research activities in China for three to six months.
The grant follows a partnership agreement recently signed between ATU and Jimei University to establish the “China-Ghana Grain Safety and Storage Joint Laboratory” under the Joint Laboratory Programme between China and African countries launched by the Ministry of Science and Technology of China in 2023.
Under the agreement, the participating institutions will share facilities and collaborate through staff exchanges, joint research activities, educational programmes, and international publications. The institutions also agreed to jointly seek additional international funding to sustain the laboratory’s operations and expand future collaborative projects between Ghana and China.
The agreement was signed on behalf of ATU by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Amevi Acakpovi, and the Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Felix Kutsanedzie. The partnership agreement is expected to run for an initial period of three years, subject to approval by China’s Ministry of Science and Technology.
Beyond improving grain preservation systems, the initiative is expected to contribute to food security, agricultural sustainability, and stronger international research collaboration while strengthening Ghana’s research capacity in food systems
