Sony is finally simplifying the Discord voice calling experience for PlayStation 5 users, rolling out an update that will allow PS5 users to directly join Discord calls from their consoles without using another device.

The upgrade is expected to slowly release over the coming weeks. US users will be among the last globally to get access to the new feature, however. Sony will bring the new Discord for PS5 to Asia first, then Europe, Australia and New Zealand and the Middle East first before enabling the simpler, more straightforward version of Discord in the Americas.

Sony is also rolling out a profile-sharing feature that will allow PlayStation users to share their gamer profiles more easily. The "Share Profile" button on the PS5 app or console will generate a profile that will let other gamers add you as a friend.

According to estimations from a research firm, Sony shipped nearly five times as many PlayStation 5 consoles as Microsoft did Xbox Series X/S consoles in the first quarter of 2024.

Microsoft is tossing its hat into the mobile gaming shop ring by launching its own “cross-platform" online mobile game shop to compete with Google's Play Store and Apple's App Store.

The competitor will launch this July, according to Microsoft, and will only offer Microsoft-owned games to start, like Candy Crush, Farm Heroes, Minecraft's mobile version, Call of Duty: Mobile, and Diablo Immortal. The games won’t be added to the platform all at once, though. Following its launch, Microsoft's mobile gaming store will then open up to include third-party games.

Xbox President Sarah Bond revealed in an interview with Bloomberg that a big reason Microsoft pushed to acquire Activision Blizzard, which also includes mobile game studio King, was so that Microsoft could push into mobile gaming in a big way.

"There isn't actually a gaming platform in-store experience that is centered around players and goes truly cross-device," Bond said. "We're going to start on the web, and we're doing that because that really allows us to have it be an experience that's accessible across all devices, all countries, no matter what, independent of, you know, close ecosystem stores."
