Fellow TESCONITES,
Everything was alright until a pandemic which was not expected brought the global economy down, another depression in most economies. But despite the pandemic the Ghanaian economy grew substantially yielding a remarkable economic growth by 5.4% in 2021. The Ghanaian economy was in state of recovery until the invasion of Russia-Ukraine War in the first quarter of 2022 which led a lot of economies into a turmoil.

Fuel prices begun to skyrocket, leading to higher inflation in most economies globally, the Federal Reserves of America begun to release their reserves to make the United State Dollar to grow stronger against the over 80% economies that trade in the US Dollar in the international market.

The NPP government promised Ghanaians to fix the economy, and this is why we will work tirelessly for the good people of Ghana, the economic hardship is known, the government is aware and even the president stated clearly that we’re all in this together, we feel what you also feel. We wouldn’t apportion blames to what is happening globally and due to this the NPP government led by H.E. Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo consulted Coincil of State, Cabinet and Key Stakeholders in the economy including; GUTA, AGI, Market Women, Ghana National Chambers of Commerce, Ghana Association of Banks, GPRTU and Transport Operators, and many other stakeholders, to find solutions to the economy.

The President in his speech on Sunday October 30, 2022, enumerated key measures to fix the economy. The measures taken by the President on economic recovery are outlined below;
a. Restore Macroeconomic stability though an IMF supported program
b. Tackle cost of living by working to stabilize prices of petroleum product through new supply arrangements.
c. Encourage traders to tone down profiteering which is contributing to inflationary pressures.
d. Restore debt sustainability by reducing debt to GDP ratio to 55% by 2028.
e. Improve national resources and liquidity by raising revenues from 13% to 18%-20% of GDP.
f. Pursue inclusive growth while protecting the poor.
g. Energy sector reforms to reduce the risk of the sector to the budget.
h. Reduce budget rigidities by capping statutory funds.
i. Continue with efforts to reduce central government expenditures through budget cuts of 30%.
j. Start the process of discouraging importation of Rice, Poultry, Vegetable Oil, Fruit Juices etc.
k. Tackle currency speculation to limit volatilities to the cedi.
l. Ensure no haircuts to treasury bill holders in the debt restructuring strategy.

The NPP government is very resilient to fixation of economic hardship, and we plead with all Ghanaians to stay calm. Abraham Lincoln once said, “government for the people, by the people and with the people”. The measures outlined would be effective if we Ghanaians work and support the government. Therefore, we urge all stakeholders in the economy to support the government to help recover the economy together.

Thank you.
