-IMPACT AND CHANGE MAKERS SPOTTED ON CAMPUS

For many people when leadership is mentioned even in a proverb or a riddle what comes to mind is political authority or power. This hasty conclusion has attenuated the purpose and importance of leadership in our daily lives. So many people have led in certain situations without even realizing their exercise of leadership. At LUCG due to the premium we place on leadership, whether in a lecture setting or in extra-curricular activities, special value is place on ethics, innovation, and leadership. This culture has made our students unique in the world of complexity and opportunities.

Under the cloud of our leadership culture, Mohammed Awal and Abdul Basit, level 100 Computer Science students spotted an entrepreneurial leadership opportunity in a vacant and idle land around their hostel and decided to harness its availability to make impact in the community. The two buddies from Tamale, figured out that in the whole of lakeside community 6, there are no vegetable farms or farmers’ markets where fresh vegetables can be sourced or purchased by the growing middle class residents. They decided to act instead of complain, by starting a vegetable farm. To get capital for this venture, these Computer Science Students-turned farmers, so immersed in the entrepreneurial spirit and mindset, gathered scraps from the nearby field and raised small capital to invest in vegetables production venture.

Although, this entrepreneurial buddies, hailed from the north and have exposure to the dynamics of crop farming, this was the first time they engaged in vegetable farming. They then employed learn-by-doing approach to get things done, which culminated in the commercially active vegetable farm on campus today. Currently, they produce lettuce, tomatoes, onions, and other every vegetables for the local market.

According to Mohammed Awal, who is also responsible for the establishment of Dar’wa Podcast for GMSA on campus, they are exploring expansion of the farming venture by sourcing more capital and leasing more land from the University’s Estates and facilities outfit. He hopes that this venture will not only provide them source of incomes, but generate employment opportunities for fellow students on campus.

The examplary leadership by these students has highlighted the need for us to change the way we educate in our universities in Africa. Whiles in some western universities credits are awarded for learners’ experience, in Africa every credit awarded must emanate from classroom work. It also validates LUCG’s educational philosophy that all students must start building businesses and ventures from level 200 in group and graduate as business owners instead of owners of Long Essays. With this approach it will be normal for a student of Computer Sciences , Arabic or Engineering in a cross course selection system to Learn leadership, entrepreneurship, marketing, and even corporate finance.

Mohammed Awal and Abdul Basit are not accidental achievers, they were also part of the group of students who restored the abandoned soccer field behind the university hospital for use as an alternative to the Astro Turf. So these two great students are repeat achievers and deserve celebration.

To complement their efforts we should support their business with capital investments as well as support to set up a structured business capable of attracting more stakeholders.

ANOTHER HIGH ACHIEVING LUCG’S ALUMNUS SPOTTED

Mr. Ahmed Tijani’s journey to greatness epitomizes what the cocktail of tenacity of purpose and incurable passion for entrepreneurship can produce. When Ahmed enrolled at the then Madina Institute of Science and Technology, now Lakeside University College, Ghana, like many pioneer students of the new university, he was pretty much ambivalent; not knowing which concentration of Business Administration to opt for or career path to follow. The University’s enriched courses in liberal arts, science, business, and technology prepared him to think critically, behave ethically, develop the ability to solve complex problems, and above all acquire skills to exercise entrepreneurial leadership.

Therefore, whiles on campus, one thing observable about him, even at a cursory glance was his developed passion for social entrepreneurship and community leadership.

Through sniffing around campus for business opportunities, as a typical creative entrepreneur will do, he came up with the idea of setting up a copying center at the SOBAT’s Block. This venture, which was an extension of a small print shop he owns within the Lakeside community, provided commercial printing and copying services to fellow students and the university community.

Since earning his degree in marketing in 2020, he has expanded his printing business beyond the lakeside community to the admiration of Business Watchers. Over the years he has established innovative business-lines and diversified his investments. Through his multiple entrepreneurial endeavors, he has employed some of his colleagues and current students, which made him one of the best impact-makers of the lives of many young people, especially from the Zongo community, where he hailed.

Moreover, over the years he has not only supported the mission of the university through active leadership in LUCG’s alumni’s activities, but has financially and materially supported the marketing campaigns’ efforts of the university.

Apart from serving as the CEO of Ya Awal ventures, he also doubles as the Vice Chairman of Lakeside Business Association. Whiles a student of LUCG, whether an issue related to Business Students Association, GMSA, SRC, and welfare of fellow students, he was there to lead. Ahmed, who his colleagues and folks just affectionately call TJ, beyond the exercise of result-oriented entrepreneurial leadership also has been a champion of community empowerment. He led and continue to champion numerous campaigns to combat drug abuse, sports-betting menace, among others in the Zongo community.

As part of his personal and professional enrichment agenda, TJ has recently enrolled in Graduate Studies at UPSA. He was one of the few young business people selected to participate in an event dubbed “UPSA -1000 Project.” The program is purported to train 1000 Youth in various apprenticeship courses.

For TJ, the sky is certainly the real limit when it comes to social entrepreneurship and community leadership. He has broken several barriers and remain one of the proud alumnus of LUCG, providing inspiration to current and future students of the university. He typifies “the Audacity of Hope.”

POSITIVE IMPACT OF LUCG’S ALUMNUS SPOTED

Although, Taufique Sayibu, a pioneer alumnus of School of Engineering of Lakeside University College childhood’s dream was to pursue a career in aviation, he trained as a civil engineer. After graduating with first class honors, his exceptional performance propelled him to secure a position as an Assistant District Engineer at Ministry of Local Government. This little career trajectory preset did not extinguish his incurable passion for career in aviation.

So when the call to train as Aircraft Maintenance Engineer’s opportunity came from Lanka Pacific Aviation & Engineering Academy of Sri Lanka, he quickly answered with confidence.

As the training session unfolds, Ing. Shayibu when given a rare privilege to speak on Aircraft Maintenance Engineering career to inspire others, he delivered beyond expectation, highlighting the vital role of Aircraft Maintenance Engineers and their contribution to aviation safety.

This experience, according to his testimony has been a significant milestone in his journey into the aviation and engineering professions.

Whiles Ing. Shayibu’s performance as an upcoming Aircraft Maintenance Engineer may astound some people, for many of his cohort and faculty members at LUCG he has always been a go-getter with an unsurpassed motivation for accomplishments.
