The Ladies' College

The Ladies' College Independent girls' school, providing an excellent education for students since 1872 in Guernsey.

The Ladies' College was founded in 1872 to provide an academic education based on Christian principles for girls in Guernsey. An early example of the pioneering movement in women’s education, it drew much of its inspiration from Cheltenham Ladies' College. The College values its links with the past and previous traditions such as that of wearing red carnations on Speech Day - a custom that dates f

rom 1904. The College rapidly outgrew its first home and, for 85 years, occupied buildings in the Grange, Saint Peter Port, which now house the Island's Education Department offices. From 1907 onwards a number of places have been reserved each year for state-funded pupils and demand for places at the College has continued to rise. In 1949, the Island's Government, the States of Deliberation made Melrose House available for the Infant and Junior classes in order to create more space at the College for senior pupils. In 1962, The Ladies' College was re-constituted as a grant-aided school. The old school buildings were handed over to the Education Council and the States built a new school for the Senior College in the grounds of Melrose House and took responsibility for the future capital development of The Ladies' College. Since 1962, the College has operated as an autonomous grant-aided school under the supervision of its own Board of Governors and the Education Council. The school buildings have been developed over the past twelve years to include a dedicated Sixth Form Centre, Art and Drama Block, modern refectory, new classrooms and library and most recently a Food technology and dark room facility.

Well done to all our Gold and Silver DofE participants on successfully completing their qualifying expeditions in the Lake District over the Summer. They embraced every aspect of the adventure while taking in some of the most beautiful scenery the Lake District has to offer. The final few days of heat made the challenge even tougher, but the girls showed determination and a positive spirit throughout.

We’re delighted to share that our very own Tom Lewis has been nominated for Teacher of the Year as part of this year’s Guernsey Press Pride of Guernsey Awards! 🎉

Mr Lewis, our Form II Melrose Teacher, has been recognised for his enthusiasm, care and energy. Mr Lewis' nominators wanted to particularly highlight his contribution championing Melrose’s involvement in Young Voices, giving our pupils the unforgettable opportunity to perform as part of an 8,000-strong choir.

From clubs and concerts to DJing at school discos, Mr Lewis throws himself wholeheartedly into the wider life of Melrose, and we’re incredibly proud to see his dedication recognised with this nomination.

For Mr Lewis, some of the most rewarding moments are seeing children grow in confidence: 'When you get those light bulb moments and a student realises they can grasp something, it’s just amazing.'

If you feel Mr Lewis would be a deserving Teacher of the Year, please show your support and cast your vote! 💚
