Scary Bikers by John Godber

When former miner Don crosses paths with ex-teacher Carol in a graveyard, romance couldn’t be further from their thoughts. He’s plain-speaking, rooted in common sense, and allergic to pretension. She’s quick, spirited, and never afraid to have the last word. Their first encounter isn’t a spark - it’s a puzzle.

Yet one hesitant coffee somehow becomes a gentle cycle through the Yorkshire Dales… which grows into a tandem journey across Europe. To Florence. On a single bike. With a single map. And two people who can’t agree on much - from the merits of Lycra to which one of them is steering.

Just as the rhythm between them begins to settle into something deeper, June 23rd, 2016 arrives. Brexit Day. And suddenly Don and Carol find themselves divided by more than handlebars.

What follows is a tender, funny, and at times exasperating ride through landscapes both personal and political - a story of two unlikely companions discovering that when it comes to love, as with cycling, it takes balance, resilience, and the courage to keep pedalling.
