As I'm sure everyone will know, the States of Guernsey are in the midst of debating whether or not to close La Mare de Carteret High. While the 11+ selection process has been voted for removal, along with any other form of educational selection process, the States are debating as to what the future of the existing secondary schools are. While the Education Department want the four to remain operational, the Treasury & Resources Department want to remove one, merely leaving three.
The 'one to go' could be La Mare, and while in the past a poor reputation has stigimised the school, recent years have proved significant change. All the time and effort set to improving standards and, therefore, leading to the inspection that declred La Mare de Carteret the best States school on the island, along with continuously improved GCSE results, could all prove unworthy of seeing the school remaining in existence.
So, having La Mare de Carteret remain in existence is not for selfish reasons, because we love the school, but because it is an institution of brilliance. LMDC, despite having inaddequite facilities, is the epitimy of success through hard-work and the 'can do' attitiude. Finally, we ask the States of Guernsey this; how will an entire school merge with that of the other High schools and the current Grammar School building? While it may seem as though money saving cuts are being made, aside from being unable to cater for a future population increase on the island, money will have to be pumped into the remaining schools for extension builds, thus renderring the 'money saving' scheme unachievable. We urge you to think wisely.
