Open Space presents a multimedia art installation initiated by UNTITLED TBILISI and developed from the encounter of sound artist Varoujan Chetirian, scenographer Ana Gurgenidze, and the research developed by the Monument of Friendship initiative. It consists of a large-scale sound sculpture and a VR environment, exploring the legacy of Soviet-era monumental projects.
What happens when ideologies crumble, and so do monuments? What remains of them and of the ideas they were supposed to represent? And what are the possibilities of imagining something new sprouting out of the ruins?
The “Friendship Monument of the Youth of the Transcaucasian* Republics” was built in the 1980s near the tripoint of Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia at the Red Bridge — a large structure meant to represent regional unity during the final decades of the Soviet Union. Today, the monument still stands — quiet, weathered, and fenced off. It is forgotten and no longer accessible to the public, surrounded by barbed wire and guarded by Georgian border forces.
The installation works on what remains of the monument, of its meaning and its brief history, on the spectral presences of the people who crossed their paths there, on what remains of the idea of regional unity when ideologies and power structures, once deemed eternal, fall. It also investigates the current reality of the South Caucasus, asking what remains of these relationships once dictated by the imperial framework which defined their structure — what is shared, and what forms this common ground may take.
*The terminology “Transcaucasian Republics” is used here solely as a reference to the original name of the monument. UNTITLED TBILISI and Open Space are aware of it's colonial background and do not endorse its use.
