At Europe Day 2026, the Jean Monnet Chair at Ilia State University was presented, together with Giorgi Gvalia’s book — “The European Union as a Global Actor: Institutions, Values and Interests” — which was written and published within the framework of the Chair.

New Publication “The European Union as a Global Actor: Institutions, Values, and Interests”

A new book, “The European Union as a Global Actor: Institutions, Values, and Interests,” has been published within the framework of the EU-funded project “Jean Monnet Chair at Iliauni 2023–2026”.

The author of the book is Giorgi Gvalia, Professor of Politics and International Relations at Ilia State University and Head of the Jean Monnet Chair. Book is published by Ilia State University Press.

The book aims to address important questions about the European Union’s international role: What kind of international actor is the EU, and through which instruments does it act? What role do EU institutions play in shaping foreign and security policy, and how autonomous is the Union’s external action? How can the EU’s achievements in some areas and its limitations in others be explained? How does the EU act in specific regional contexts, including the South Caucasus?

The publication offers readers both theoretical discussion and empirical analysis of the European Union’s international role.

🔴 ევროკავშირის მიერ დაფინანსებული პროექტის „ჟან მონეს კათედრა ილიაუნიში 2023-2026“ ფარგლებში გამოიცა გიორგი გვალიას, ილიას სახელმწიფო უნივერსიტეტის პოლიტიკისა და საერთაშორისო ურთიერთობების მიმართულების პროფესორის, ჟან მონეს კათედრის ხელმძღვანელის, ახალი წიგნი „ევროკავშირი, როგორც გლობალური აქტორი: ინსტიტუტები, ღირებულებები და ინტერესები“.

📝 წიგნი მიზნად ისახავს უპასუხოს მნიშვნელოვან კითხვებს ევროკავშირის საერთაშორისო როლის შესახებ: როგორი ტიპის საერთაშორისო აქტორია ევროკავშირი და რა ინსტრუმენტების მეშვეობით მოქმედებს? რა როლი აკისრიათ ევროკავშირის ინსტიტუტებს საგარეო და უსაფრთხოების პოლიტიკის განსაზღვრაში და რამდენად ავტონომიურია კავშირის საგარეო კურსი? რითი აიხსნება მისი მიღწევები ზოგიერთ სფეროში და ლიმიტები სხვა მიმართულებებით? როგორ მოქმედებს ევროკავშირი კონკრეტულ რეგიონულ, მათ შორის სამხრეთ კავკასიის, კონტექსტში და სხვ.

წიგნის „პოლიტიკა ევროპაში“ პირველი ქართული თარგმანის პრეზენტაცია და სტუდენტური სამეცნიერო კონფერენცია ილიაუნიში

ილიას სახელმწიფო უნივერსიტეტის ჟან მონეს კათედრისა და მეცნიერებათა და ხელოვნების ფაკულტეტის ორგანიზებით გაიმართა წიგნის „პოლიტიკა ევროპაში“ პირველი ქართული თარგმანის პრეზენტაცია და სტუდენტური სამეცნიერო კონფერენცია სახელწოდებით: „ევროკავშირი და ცვალებადი მსოფლიო: გეოპოლიტიკური ძვრების, სტრატეგიული ავტონომიისა და გლობალური პასუხისმგებლობების გზაჯვარედინზე“.
ღონისძიების პირველი ნაწილი დაეთმო წიგნის ,,პოლიტიკა ევროპაში’’ ქართული თარგმანის პრეზენტაციას, რომელიც კონრად ადენაუერის ფონდის სამხრეთ კავკასიის წარმომადგენლობის მხარდაჭერით გამოიცა. წიგნის სამეცნიერო რედაქტორები არიან ილიას სახელმწიფო უნივერსიტეტის საერთაშორისო ურთიერთობების მიმართულების პროფესორი, ჟან მონეს კათედრის ხელმძღვანელი გიორგი გვალია და პოლიტიკის მეცნიერების დოქტორანტი, გიორგი ოდოშაშვილი.
ღონისძიების მეორე ნაწილი დაეთმო სტუდენტურ სამეცნიერო კონფერენციასა და პოსტერების კონკურსს თემაზე: „ევროკავშირი და ცვალებადი მსოფლიო: გეოპოლიტიკური ძვრების, სტრატეგიული ავტონომიისა და გლობალური პასუხისმგებლობების გზაჯვარედინზე“. მონაწილეებმა წარმოადგინეს ნაშრომები, რომლებიც ეხება ევროპული პოლიტიკის, ინტეგრაციისა და საერთაშორისო ურთიერთობების თანამედროვე გამოწვევებს.

Ilia State University hosted the presentation of the first Georgian translation of Politics in Europe, alongside a student academic conference titled "The European Union and a Changing World: At the Crossroads of Geopolitical Shifts, Strategic Autonomy, and Global Responsibility." The event was organised by the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and the Jean Monnet Chair at Ilia State University.
The first part of the event was dedicated to the presentation of the Georgian edition of Politics in Europe, published with the support of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung Georgia. The academic editors of the book are Professor Giorgi Gvalia, Jean Monnet Chair at Ilia State University and professor of International relations and Giorgi Odoshashvili, a PhD candidate in Political Science, lecturer of International relations.
The second part of the event featured a student academic conference and poster competition on the theme "The European Union and a Changing World: At the Crossroads of Geopolitical Shifts, Strategic Autonomy, and Global Responsibility." Participants presented papers addressing contemporary challenges in European politics, integration, and international relations.
Authors of the best papers and posters were awarded vouchers from Ligamus Book House.

Yesterday we had an interesting panel discussion organized by Erasmus + Office in Georgia. I had the privilege to present Jean Monnet Chair at Iliauni, project goals and deliverables. in 🇬🇪 🇪🇺

🔴 2025 წლის 29 მაისს ილიას სახელმწიფო უნივერსიტეტის G 106 საკონფერენციო დარბაზში გაიმართება სტუდენტური სამეცნიერო კონფერენცია და პოსტერების კონკურსი თემაზე: „ევროკავშირი და ცვალებადი მსოფლიო: გეოპოლიტიკური ძვრების, სტრატეგიული ავტონომიისა და გლობალური პასუხისმგებლობების გზაჯვარედინზე“. ღონისძიება ორგანიზებულია ევროკავშირის მიერ მხარდაჭერილი პროექტის „ჟან მონეს კათედრა ილიაუნიში“ და მეცნიერებათა და ხელოვნების ფაკულტეტის მიერ.

🌐 კონფერენცია და პოსტერების კონკურსი ღიაა ილიაუნისა და საქართველოს სხვა სახელმწიფო უნივერსიტეტების პოლიტიკის მეცნიერების, საერთაშორისო ურთიერთობებისა და ევროპისმცოდნეობის საბაკალავრო და სამაგისტრო პროგრამების სტუდენტებისთვის.

On June 10, 2024, the conference hall G 106 at Ilia State University was the venue for a vibrant student scientific conference and a poster competition titled “European Union Today: Integration Challenges, Opportunities, and Prospect.” This event was organized by the European Union-supported project “Jean Monnet Chair at Iliauni” in collaboration with the Faculty of Arts and Sciences.

The conference and poster competition saw enthusiastic participation from students enrolled in bachelor's and master's programs in Social and Political Sciences, including political science, international relations, European studies, public administration, sociology, and more.

The event featured three insightful thematic panels:

1. Internal Challenges of the European Union: Nationalism, Populism, and Resilience of Democracy
2. European Union and the Turbulent International Order**
3. Georgia-EU Relations: Challenges and Prospects**

Participants presented compelling proposals and posters, showcasing their research and perspectives on various facets of the European Union. The authors of the selected proposals and posters were awarded Ligamus vouchers, and the selected proposals will be published electronically. Every student who took part in the conference and poster competition received a certificate of participation, recognizing their valuable contributions to the event.
