Back Home
{2 of 2}

Students were asked to return to their homes—not only as structures, but also as memories. They explored the subtle layers embedded in their living spaces through inhabitation and daily life. The task was to identify forms and signs of home that quietly shape existence.

The project has two-parts:

From Home

Physical Home – The anatomy of their living environment: tectonic structure, details, historical layers. The home is read as a body, with its own arrangement, weight, and history.

Mental Home – The emotional landscape: memories, imagination, childhood episodes, and spatial consciousness. Rooms are not dimensions or functions, but resonant chambers of experience.

What transforms ordinary space into the sacred? By breaking the connection with a specific time, students search for enduring values within their homes. In this way, their works become self-referential, based on internal experience. Memory fragments discovered through physical and phenomenological research coalesce into reconstructed images. The material becomes a kind of motivation, to be shared with others.

To Home

One student’s archived material, a spatial portrait, is given to another. The second student constructs a reimagined model of the first student’s home.

The process becomes a path of double cognition. The student who explores his own home learns to see and express his own inner space. And the one who creates the idea of a new home based on this research explores the inner world of the other—a spatial sensitivity and perception. The person’s inner home continues to exist in the imagination of others—albeit in a new form, in new materials.

The works presented in this exhibition are not just building projects. They are attempts at a homecoming—an attempt to understand how spaces live within a person and how a person continues to rebuild it, even when they leave their physical house behind.

Graduation Show 2026

Opening: Thursday, July 3, 4:00–6:00 PM

The Free University of Tbilisi is pleased to present the 2026 Diploma Project Exhibition of the VA[A]DS Visual Arts Program at the Campus Gallery.

The exhibition features works by:

Nino (Niko) Salakaia
Ana Shonia
Tati Khutsishvili
Mariam Zatiashvili
Lizi Murvanidz
Nino (Niko) Salakaia’s diploma project is an attempt to carve out space in the context of q***r identity, religion, and language. It explores the path a person takes from seeking refuge in religion to seeking refuge from religion.

Ana Shonia’s diploma project explores memory as a shifting and fragmented experience rooted in personal and family archives. Glass and ceramics become fragile spaces where the past, mythology, and the fear of forgetting intersect.

Tati Khutsishvili’s diploma project explores the body as a vessel that carries memory and time. Painting and performance together create a space where the body is not only a performer but also an archive, where experience is stored and reactivated.

Lizi Murvanidze’s diploma project explores the visual environment of a city (Tbilisi) and how it transitions into art objects. Artworks show how urban symbols, images, and architecture change when they are transferred into new perceptual conditions.

Mariam Zatiashvili’s diploma project explores identity at the intersection of the digital and physical worlds. Using synthetic materials and symbolic elements, she creates hybrid forms that reflect the merging of online and real-world spaces.

Performance by Tati Khutsishvili: July 3, 4:30 PM

Nino (Niko) Salakaia’s continuous reading performance, 16:00–18:00

Exhibition Dates: July 4–30, 2026
Diploma Project Advisor: Tamuna Chabashvili

Thesis Advisors: Nana Kipiani, Tamar Chaduneli
