American High School students had an outdoor class in Georgian language at Mama Daviti. Students with their literature teacher Tekla Beradze and homeroom teacher Ana Khutsidze visited The Mtatsminda Pantheon of Writers and Public Figures. They went to Nikolz Baratashvili’s grave memorial and discussed his “Evening at Mtatsminda”.

American High School grade 8 students had outdoor class at Dmanisi archaeological site. They saw the specific spots where excavations are conducted. Guest speaker, Sophio Panchulidze, an archaeologist who participated in Dmanisi archaeological expedition for 25 years, talked about the life of Dmanisi hominins, homo georgicus, also explained what plants were spread and what animals lived here at the time. Students also watched the movie about archaeological excavations and discoveries in Dmanisi from 1937 up today. Also, they climbed on Dmanisi medieval fortress and enjoyed the site.

American High School students went to Tao-klarjeti. Students of 9th, 10th and 11th classes visited historical places of Shavsheti, Klarjeti and Tao. They had an opportunity to see the places which they have learned about in Georgian history and Georgian hagiography. During a 4 day trip they saw a lot of historical and cultural monuments, such as: Mere’s castle, Seytan (Kajeti) castle, Ardahan, Shavsheti, Satle castle, Tbeti, Doliskana, Artvin, Artanuji, JoJokhetis Canyon, Akhiza’s castle, Yusufeli, Otkhta church, Kavkasidze’s castle, Vejangeti castle, Ishkani, Oshki, Khakhuli monastery, Tortum waterfall, Torumi castle and Bana cathedral.

For American High School students, excursions of the new study year have started with a rafting tour. The day was full of various sports activities. 8-th, 9-th, 10-th and 11-th graders visited adventure club “Jomardi” located in river valley of Aragvi, and also tried adventure park tour. “X Park” is sports and fun city made of wires, which has roads with different difficulty levels. Students had a lot of fun and came back home relaxed and fully recharged. 🏃‍♂️🚣‍♀️🤸‍♀️

On 3-4 March 2018, international karate tournament “Caucasian Cup” was held in Borchkha (Artvini, Turkey). This high-level tournament was a success for the club “Grigali”. From 5 sportsmen, who participated in the tournament, three were from European School. They got 4 gold medals overall.

1) Ana Darchiashvili, American High School 10th grade student, (16-17-year-old group) – 1 Gold medal;

2) Natia Tutberidze, American High School 10th grade student, (14-15-year-old group) – 1 Gold medal.

On December 23-24, 2017, the Hotel Rixos, Borjomi hosted the Fall 2017 Senior Project Presentations of the American High School. This special and formal event was attended by three English and subject teachers with Ms. Natia Tevzadze, Academic Dean. Fifteen students of the 12th grade displayed very well-planned and organized projects based on informative topics in various fields. Project titles included “The Evolution of Advertising”, “the Unstoppable March of Time”, “Tales of Music and the Brain”, and “Turning Point Battles of WW II”.

Teachers evaluated, assessed and gave a recommendation on further improvement of each student’s presentation skills. The students were also graded according to the awareness of the presented materials, conducted research surveys, and public speaking. Although the presentation session encompassed close to 5 hours, students and teachers were able to enjoy the educative and socially beneficial evening which was followed by offerings of a sumptuous dessert table that summarized the day. An informative and yet also relaxing weekend prior to the holidays.

On Tuesday, February 13, American High School Grades 8, 9, 11, and 12 students in World History and AP World History classes toured the Georgian National Museum with Mr. Joseph Blake and Dr. Natia Pipia. Dr. Pipia, a noted author of a scholarly published work regarding the numismatic treasures of Georgia and history professor at Tbilisi State University, explained the significance of many of the ancient Roman republic and empire treasures on display, followed by a tour of the Soviet Occupation exhibition on permanent display. Exploratory understanding and comprehension of Georgia’s place and impact via the ancient Silk Road at the crossroads of Europe, Asia, and the world as a whole is essential for understanding the past, present, and future.

On Tuesday, November 21 nineteen students of Grades 8 and 9 with Mr. Giorgi Tchumburidze and Mr. Joseph Blake toured the Georgian National Museum as a continuation of their World History classes. Accompanied by a museum guide, they explored Georgia’s ancient gold, silver and precious stone treasures and coins, the development of man from the Paleolithic to Neolithic Age, coupled with medieval armory, Georgian period clothing, and the Soviet Occupation of Georgia Exhibition. Mariam Chakhnashvili, Grade 8 stated “The exhibitions brought to life the topics that we have been exploring in the development of man from the old stone age to Egypt, Greece, Rome, and China. It was fascinating."

Dr. Irma Barbakadze, Head of the American Education Department - European School is currently on a one-year visit to the United States after which she will be awarded an additional degree of secondary and higher education expert.
During her visit Dr. Irma Barbakadze attended the annual College Board forum on October 25-27, 2017 in New York. College Board executives attended the meeting as well as the representatives of member schools and universities.
Dr. Barbakadze also met with Mr. Clay Hensley, Sr. Director of Higher Education, and Mr. Russel Dover, Director of Higher Education Outreach. They discussed the American High School and the results of the students. They also talked about recent challenges including the recognition of the American High School diploma in Georgia. Another topic was the recognition of AP Exam results in Georgia and granting credit for them by Georgian universities.
The directors of College Board showed interest to contact the Minister of Education of Georgia regarding AP exam recognition initiative. They also expressed idea to have the SAT recognized as an equivalent for Georgian National Exam of Skills as it covers all the pertinent components.

შეხვედრაზე განხილულ იქნა საქართველოში AP გამოცდის შედეგების აღიარებისა და ქართული უნივერსიტეტების მიერ კრედიტის მინიჭების საკითხი.
College Board_ის ორივე დირექტორმა გამოთქვა ინტერესი მიმართონ საქართველოს განათლების მინისტრს ინიციატივით AP-აღიარების შესახებ. ასევე, გამოითქვა მოსაზრება SAT_ის შედეგის აღიარების შესახებ, რამდენადაც იგი მოიცავს საქართველოში აპრობირებულ უნარების გამოცდის ყველა კომპონენტს.
