The phrasal verb "go off" is very strange-it's not just that it has multiple meanings but the fact that if we use it to talk about something that demonstrates that it is activated by making a noise then it means "to start working" or even "to explode" but if it is something that works silently (or at least quietly) then it means "to stop operating" e.g. The power /water has gone off again.

Did you know that sometimes pick up can be used without an object, ie. you don't pick something up, something picks up? So, you can say "The stone picked up speed as it ran down the hill." This means the stone got faster! Can you think of any ways of using pick up without an object?
