𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗼 𝗜 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴?

Our first lesson would consistent of reviewing you or your child's current lesson plan and level of understanding. I then focus on going back to fundamentals, filling in the gaps and building a stronger foundation.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗺𝘆 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝘁𝘆𝗹𝗲 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲?

I teach solving maths problems from different angles depending on the student's learning style. Whenever the student makes a mistake, I don't immediately call it out as incorrect, but challenge the student with guided questions, so they can get to the correct answer themselves.

In addition, instead of first demonstrating how to solve a novel problem and then making the student repeat the solution with slightly different examples, I first present the student with the problem and give them time to think it through.

"Mathematics is not about numbers, equations, computations, or algorithms. It is about understanding."

What does it take to improve student success and interest in math?

Math mentors help students to succeed in math and develop the right attitude towards it, regardless of a natural affinity or being ‘good at math'. I do this by..

1. Building confidence.
2. Encouraging questioning and making space for curiosity.
3. Emphasizing conceptual understanding over procedure.
4. Providing authentic problems that increase their drive to engage with math.
5. Sharing a positive attitude towards math.

Teachers who coach teams in a mathematical modeling challenge share ideas for helping students develop more confidence.

"Math may be more sensitive to pandemic-related schooling disruptions for a few reasons, experts say:

- Unlike reading, math is almost always formally learned at school. Parents are often less well-equipped to help their children with math, at a time when parent support can be even more crucial to student progress.

- Broader stress and trauma related to the pandemic may worsen existing math anxiety in some students, and math anxiety can exacerbate students’ other stress while in class.

- It can be more challenging for teachers to engage in effective math instructional practices via remote platforms."

Previous studies can provide a window into why math learning is taking a big hit during the pandemic, and what educators can do about it.
