One of the best cultural events in France is returning on May 23, 2026, and surprisingly, many visitors still don’t know about it. During Nuit Européenne des Musées, museums across Paris and the rest of Europe open their doors for free late into the night, often with special programming you normally would not see during regular hours.
Created by the French Ministry of Culture, the event transforms museums into evening spaces filled with concerts, performances, guided visits, temporary exhibits, and nighttime access to permanent collections. More than 3,000 museums across Europe participate every year, but Paris is usually one of the busiest and most atmospheric places to experience it.
Some major Paris museums expected to participate include the Louvre, Musée d’Orsay, Grand Palais, Petit Palais, Musée Rodin, Palais Galliera, and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs. Many museums require free reservations in advance, which catches a lot of travelers off guard because people assume “free” means you can simply walk in. The most popular museums often fill their reservation slots quickly.
What makes the evening special is the atmosphere itself. Seeing Paris museums after dark feels completely different from daytime visits. Courtyards stay lively late into the evening, streets around the museums remain busy, and many locals treat it almost like a citywide cultural festival rather than a normal museum trip.
