THE GRENADA YOUTH UPLIFTMENT PROGRAMME (GYUP)
The Grenada Youth Upliftment Programme (GYUP). This youth empowerment programme envisions youth as being important stakeholders in our nation and will enable them to contribute to the social balance through family support and community service. This vision was derived from the major issues affecting our youthful population:
• The high level of unemployment
• Entrenched deviant behavior
• Exclusion from mainstream social and economic environment
To deal with these issues the Grenada Youth Upliftment Programme (GYUP) was derived under these broad headings:
• Grenada Youth Education & Training Programme
This programme focuses on ensuring that the nation’s youth reach their full potential and contribute to the sustainable and economic development of Grenada, through education
enhancement, skill /vocational training and employment.
• Grenada Youth Leadership and Service Programme
This programme is designed to engage the youthful population in Community-focused initiatives that will develop their leadership skills and foster the desire, within them, to participate directly towards the development of their respective societies.
• Grenada Youth Rehabilitation Programme
This programme is designed to provide the necessary psychosocial support for at-risk and marginalized youths.
• Small Business Enterprise Programme
This programme is designed to provide Small Business training and micro-credit facilities for young people with sound business ideas.
• Grenada Youth Apprenticeship Project
This is a new component of the GYUP Programme. The Grenada Youth Apprenticeship Program involves strategies targeted at youth employment, skills development and social cohesion. The program will use proactive measures to increase the employability and productivity of young people aged 16-35. The commitment to supporting and empowering young people will ultimately contribute to the socio-economic development of a nation where young people have opportunities to further their skills and develop their careers, in a way that motivates them. Through the GYAP Programme, youth’s hard work, and that of their managers, trainers, mentors and support mechanisms, will enable them to qualify themselves for success in life.
