In December 1984, roughly 3,000 beluga whales became trapped in the ice-choked Chukchi Sea near Russia, forced to breathe through small leads surrounded by ice as thick as 10 feet. An icebreaker, the Admiral Makarov, was dispatched with its reinforced hull to carve a path to open water. At first the belugas wouldn’t follow the ship through the narrow channel. Then the crew tried something unusual: they played classical music—Tchaikovsky—over the ship’s speakers.

The whales began to trail the vessel, and after a journey of nearly 100 miles, about 2,000 belugas reached the unfrozen ocean. The multi-day, multinational effort—drawing cooperation from the Soviet Union, United States, Canada, and Japan—became known as “Operation Beluga.” ❤❤❤
