Cultivating a Love for Reading in Young Children

Whenever we meet with parents the topic of reading is inevitably raised, and more specifically the question ‘How do I get my child to read?‘.
In a world buzzing with screens and gadgets, nurturing a love for reading in our young children can feel like a challenge. Yet, instilling a passion for books from an early age is one of the greatest gifts we can give them. Reading opens doors to imagination, knowledge, and empathy, profoundly shaping their minds and hearts. As parents, here are 3 things we can do to foster a love for reading in our little ones:

1. Start Early, Start Now:
Introduce books to your child as early as possible. Even infants benefit from hearing the cadence and rhythm of language. Books with bright colors and textures are perfect for engaging their senses.

2. Make It Routine:
Set aside dedicated time each day for reading. Before bedtime or quiet afternoons are perfect for establishing a reading routine that becomes a cherished part of your child’s daily life.

3. Lead by Example:
Children often mimic their parents’ behaviors. Let them see you reading for pleasure. Whether it’s a novel, a magazine, or even a comic, the words on the pages are of no consequence, your enjoyment of reading, is what will inspire their lifelong love for reading!
