💎 Do you need a college diploma or university degree to become a successful jeweller?

It’s one of the questions I’m asked more than almost any other.

In my latest YouTube video, I discuss the different routes into the jewellery industry, from college and university courses to being completely self-taught.

After more than 38 years in the trade, employing jewellers and training thousands of students around the world, I’ve seen talented jewellers come from every background imaginable.

So which route is best?

Do qualifications really matter?

And what are employers actually looking for when hiring a jeweller?

If you’ve ever considered jewellery making as a career, a hobby, or even a second career later in life, this is a video you won’t want to miss.

🎥 Watch the full video now on my YouTube channel. The link is in my bio or visit www.atb.yt
I’d love to know your thoughts too. Did you learn through formal education, an apprenticeship, or are you self-taught?

This has been a trusted workshop companion for generations of jewellers and for me, it’s been there from day one.

I’ve used borax as a flux every working day of my jewellery career. In fact, I’ve been using it ever since I started making jewellery in my parents’ garage at the age of 21.
Why do I still use it? Because it works.

Borax helps prevent oxidation during soldering, keeps metal surfaces clean, encourages solder to flow smoothly, and can help reduce firescale. It’s simple, reliable, inexpensive, and has stood the test of time.

Over the years I’ve tried plenty of different fluxes, but I always come back to borax. Sometimes the traditional methods are still the best.

Do you use borax, or do you use something else?

Just over 4 weeks left to enrol for the Jewellery Fundamentals Diploma at At The Bench Academy.

Building a strong foundation is everything in jewellery making. After forty years at the bench and a lifetime spent teaching, I can confidently say this is the diploma I wish existed when I started out. If you’re looking for a course built on real-world expertise, practical skills, and direct support, this is the one to enrol on.

What sets this diploma apart?

Every lesson is taught by me, drawing on four decades of professional experience. There’s no confusion from conflicting styles or methods, you’ll follow a clear, consistent path from start to finish. I believe in hands-on learning, so you’ll receive direct feedback and guidance from myself and Louise throughout the course. No generic tutors, no hands-off learning, just genuine support and practical, workshop-based knowledge.

One of the most common frustrations I hear from students is running out of essential tools or materials. That won’t happen here. We make absolutely certain that every student receives a complete set of tools and materials, tailored for the course. Whether you choose to add the tool kit, the materials kit, or both, you’ll have everything you need, right when you need it. We never run out, and you’ll never be left waiting.

Spaces are strictly limited to ensure every student gets the attention and support they deserve. This isn’t a mass online course – it’s a focused, personal journey into the world of jewellery making, designed to set you up for success at the bench.

"This is the ONLY diploma program endorsed by the National Association of Jewellers."

Whether you’re starting out or looking to build on your skills, this diploma gives you a direct line to forty years of expertise, practical demonstrations, and the kind of honest feedback that helps you improve with every project.
