🔥Have you ever had the wonderful experience of building, lighting and then cooking on an open fire? Doesn't it feel wholesome and calming?

In our outdoor classroom, working together as a team, our class 8 children (age 13 and 14) have learned to safely build and light a fire and prepare food that they have grown themselves on our school allotment.

At York Steiner School, building a close connection to the natural world through learning outdoors is baked into the curriculum, something that evidence shows improves children and young people's mental, physical and social wellbeing .

This experiential approach also deepens understanding of related subjects taught in our more traditional, desk based lessons, whilst giving every student a chance to grow their confidence in their practical abilities, alongside their academic and intellectual development.

Music making is at the heart of our school curriculum. From daily songs in kindergarten, children move to playing recorder in the younger classes and are introduced to lyres, ukuleles, guitars, melodicas, bar instruments (xylophones, glockenspiels) and other percussion instruments throughout Main and Upper School.

If you have ever had the pleasure of attending one of our school festivals, you may have heard older classes singing in 4 part harmony, an incredibly moving experience.

We have choirs and folk clubs, encouraging intergenerational musicianship.

On Friday 9th October, a special concert will be held in school, celebrating the music of Gyorgy Kurtag. A concert of two pianos will be played by Simon-Mary Vincent and Nigel Bartram, accompanied by students from York Steiner School.

This October, in celebration of the York Environment Festival we are hosting a number of free events for families, both at school and in the community.

3rd October - free events for families with children under age 4 and from 3 to 6 years old. These lovely family events will include crafting, stories and songs and families will learn more about how they can grow their children's connection to the natural world. Families need to book for these events as spaces are limited.

10th October - in our outdoor classroom, we will be hosting a lovely event where families can drop in and learn more about how we teach children to understand food provenance.

On the 27th October, in partnership with the Foss Fairy Trail, we are hosting a beautiful morning for families on the fairy trail. There will be crafts, story time and music to enjoy throughout the walk along the trail.

These events are free and we hope that they will help to bring families closer to nature and enjoy time together.

It's been a lovely start to the year in our wonderful Early Years Kindergarten.

As we welcome our new little Seeds (three years old) the older children, our Leaves and Buds (ages 4-6), are relishing stepping up as role models in our family-like groups, leading the way and showing how life is in a Steiner Waldorf kindergarten.

At this time of year, children help to prepare the apples brought in by many of our families, picked from gardens and allotments nearby. This delicious treat will be enjoyed by all!

Next up: Harvest Festival and Michaelmas! We are asking our school families to bring in food bank donations by Tues 29th Sept.

💫 Our Saturday Group drop-in sessions offer the perfect opportunity to try our groups in our nurturing, gentle environment, where babies and small children can explore and play.

🌱 Everything is centred on the child. Our children grow and learn at their own pace, while developing as individuals.

🙌 Over the summer, one of our kindergarten teachers spent a lot of time preparing to welcome the children to a new academic year by creating the most beautiful name badges for their class.

🌍 York Steiner School Craft Group

📆 Next session: Tuesday 15 September

💫 Our enthusiastic group of crafters meets every Tuesday to create beautiful handmade items to sell at our school stalls and fairs. As well as crafting, we always have good conversations, hot drinks and biscuits, which are always part of the fun.

🙌 No skills are required – you just need an enthusiasm to learn and the desire to make new friends.

🙌 We look forward to exploring new craft techniques together with our regular groups and new friends. Babies and toddlers are welcome.
