There's still time to join us for a free screening of 'The Returning Tide', a film which revisits more than twenty feminist activists from Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and mainland China to trace the lasting impact of the 1995 United Nations Fourth World Conference on Women.

It follows the connections forged during the conference, and explores the rise of grassroots, q***r movement and digital rights alongside the backlash these activists now face. Through these intertwined stories, the film continually asks what sustains such struggles and how feminist movements persist, transform, and evolve across generations and regions.

The film screening will be hosted on campus on Wednesday 7 October, and will be followed by an online Q&A with the film-makers. All are welcome! Book now via link in bio.

Could AI kill creativity?

Join our University Chancellor, Reeta Chakrabarti, and her guest Mark Fordyce, for this year's Chancellor's Lecture.

Mark will share his journey into the world of AI, and explore questions about the potential of AI to stifle human creativity, if overly relied upon. Mark will lead us in a discussion through the complexities of AI technology and its lack of transparency, which can only be found in human interaction.

Mark started his career as a recording artist, selling over a million records. He is the founder of York Data Services Limited, and holds directorshops in several Northern-based companies, from technology to music publishing.

Big news! 🔥

This October, as part of our Black History Month event programme, we are so excited to welcome the incredible Yasmin Benoit - Model to campus.

Yasmin is a British model, multi-award-winning asexual activist, writer, speaker, media consultant and researcher. Described as the "unlikely face of asexuality" by Cosmopolitan Magazine, she quickly became a leading voice for the community after publicly coming out in 2017. She started the movement for diverse asexual visibility and representation and co-founded International Asexuality Day.

Her unconventional approach to activism has been covered throughout British and international press, including Vogue, MTV, Sky News, Paper Magazine, Attitude Magazine and the BBC. In 2023, she became the first asexual grand marshal at NYC Pride, and in 2024, was the first asexual to lead Pride in London. The following year, she broke boundaries again by winning a British LGBT Award for her activism.

This is a FREE event, with opportunity to ask Yasmin questions, and enjoy drinks and canapes after the event.

Announcing our first confirmed event at King's Manor - the launch of Amanda Mason's latest novel, 'The Dark'.

From one of the most exciting talents in ghost stories comes a spinetingling seaside folk horror novel, set against the blackouts of the 1970s. When the lights go out, you can lose sight of what is real...

The Hauntology and Spectrality Group invite you to join them for a discussion about the book and writing ghost stories, with opportunity to purchase signed copies of The Dark, and enjoy a free drinks reception.

The last few tickets remain for 'Grunge Included', an exciting event taking place on campus on Monday 7 September.

The conference will explore the evolution, cultural context and enduring impact of the grunge movement, bringing together academics from across the globe. The impact of grunge goes beyond music, with its influence felt in fashion, politics, design, art and more.

A very special guest hailing from Seattle and New York, the legendary record producer and musician Gordon Raphael, will be in attendance. Known most widely for his work with The Strokes, Gordon produced their EP 'The Modern Age', and first two albums 'Is This It' and 'Room on Fire'.

Expect research, discussion and networking.

We're sure you've heard the news...

York St John has become the custodian of King's Manor, one of York's most historically significant buildings!

Built in the 15th century to house the abbots of St Mary's Abbey, it later became the headquarters of the Council of the North under the instruction of Henry VIII. More recently, King's Manor has been a place for learning, a legacy which we are proud to continue.

YSJ Events are thrilled to be able to offer a number of exceptional spaces within King's Manor for event hire. As of last week, we have the keys, and work is underway.

Watch this space, as we'll be announcing our very first events at this new venue soon!

Looking back to an incredible sunny day the end of June where our team supported the York Business School to host the annual York and North Yorkshire Top 100 awards in partnership with York Press!

A huge congratulations to all of this year's winners, especially UNTHA UK, which is the leading supplier of shredders in the UK, with over 50 years of heritage!

Thank you to everyone who joined us to celebrate the outstanding achievements of York and North Yorkshire's business community. We are already looking forward to next year!

Last week, we hosted the inaugural 'Consciousness & Education Conference: Why Consciousness Matters for the Future of Education'.

The keynote talk was delivered by Dr Federico Faggin, an Italian-American physicist and engineer best known for designing the first microprocessor, and leading the company that developed the first commercial touchpad and touchscreen. Dr Faggin was a pioneer at the forefront of modern computing, and he now supports research into consciousness through the Faggin Foundation.

This well-attended two-day conference explored the implications of a new world view for education - one which considers the growing evidence that mind is not generated by brain activity, and that consciousness is a fundamental aspect of reality. Drawing on emerging perspectives in science, philosophy and the humanities, it reconsidered assumptions about knowledge, learning, agency and meaning in educational theory and practice.

Tickets are live for Quiet Pride, an annual event hosted on campus in partnership with York Disability Rights Forum.

This event aims to be as accessible and inclusive as possible for LGBTQ+ people, and is aimed at those who want to celebrate without the noise, flashing lights and alcohol which can often accompany Pride events.

Join one of two identical sessions on Thursday 6 August, involving craft and writing workshops, talks and discussions. The full programme will be available on the Quiet Pride website.

This July, we are proud to present a new on-campus symposium in partnership with York Minster.

This event marks the 800th anniversary of the canonisation of St William of York, whose shrine at York Minster became one of the great medieval centres of pilgrimage and prayer for healing.

The theme is the reconsideration of our understanding of healing in the 21st century. While the language of healing has often been associated with miraculous restoration or cure, the symposium will explore a broader theological vision - one that includes reconciliation, belonging, dignity, and the restoration of communities as well as bodies.

Featuring an impressive line-up of international speakers, this event aims to bring the wisdom of the Christian tradition into dialogue with the complex realities of modern life.
