Here are the latest infographics from the North East. The results speak volumes, highlighting the positive difference being made and the growing aspirations of children and young people across the region.

This year's Children Challenging Industry programme in Aberdeenshire saw pupils from three local schools exploring real‑world science through hands‑on investigations.

STEM professionals from the px St Fergus Gas Terminal joined children in their classrooms to help them understand what happens at the Peterhead plant. Each class then visited the terminal, seeing first‑hand how the science they learn in school connects to real processes on site. It’s been another fantastic year of collaboration that strengthens industry–education links and inspires future STEM thinkers.

📢 We're excited to see latest addition to our sustainability resources being piloted in primary classrooms across the UK. Future Friendly Plastics has been developed in collaboration with Lancashire based polymer company Victrex and generously funded by the Chemical Industries Association.

🧪 CIEC's advisory teachers, and more than thirty partner schools, are currently testing the investigations, exploring sustainability and the science of modern polymers. We’ll be collecting feedback in July to refine the pack ahead of publication in the new school year. Watch this space!

4th -10th July is ! By turning real industrial challenges into hands‑on classroom activities, CIEC helps primary‑aged children make sense of the science and industry in their world. They make complex ideas, like greenhouse gases and net zero, feel real, relevant and manageable.

This is why we are excited to be developing new climate‑change resources that explore how greenhouse gases help keep our planet “not too cold, not too hot, but just right”, and how everyday lifestyle choices can help maintain that balance. These materials give children a clear, age‑appropriate understanding of how their actions connect to the wider world.

As Net Zero Week approaches, it’s a timely reminder of the importance of early climate education and the difference it makes when children are given the tools to understand and act.

Being back in schools delivering Children Challenging Industry has reminded me how vital it is to help girls see the possibilities in science and engineering from the very start.

Our recent ABPI pilot, especially Ellie Learns About Vaccines, gave children a brilliant glimpse into medical engineering through the challenge of insulating vaccines. Their excitement was incredible.

Ahead of , it’s a clear reminder to keep pushing so all children, and girls in particular, know they belong in science, engineering and beyond.

Three cohorts of primary teachers from across the North-East have now completed the final day of Bath Spa University's programme, led by CIEC advisory teachers Mackayla Millar and Nicky Waller. Focus4TAPS is funded by the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) and hosted by the Primary Science Teaching Trust (PSTT)

The session focused on developing a shared understanding of progression, using assessment information effectively, moderation and making manageable, reliable summative judgements. Teachers explored pupil work, progression in working scientifically, and whole-school approaches to assessment.

The impact from primary teachers was clear in the feedback:

“Excellent! Lots of opportunities for discussion and ideas on where to go from here.”

“It has provided me with a deeper insight into assessment and how to use data.”

“Very useful. We are so excited to implement this approach across school!”

“It has also helped to reduce workload!”

A fantastic end to an inspiring professional learning journey, with local primary teachers already planning how to embed a shared understanding of Focus4TAPS across their schools.
