This week, the Advance HE team delivered the Elevate MENA Symposium 2026 in partnership with Abu Dhabi University (ADU) Al Ain campus.

The symposium brought together thought leaders, educators and institutional partners to explore best practice, institutional excellence and professional development in higher education, with a particular focus on the transformational impact of Fellowship across the MENA region.

Louise Lumsden SFHEA, Head of Fellowship and Teaching Excellence Awards at Advance HE, delivered the keynote address at Elevate MENA.

In her keynote, One Reflective Journey: four categories of fellowship to support educational excellence, Louise emphasised that every Fellowship claim, whatever the category, begins from the same place.

Our Personal Development for External Examiners course supports aspiring, new and experienced external examiners to build their knowledge and confidence.

As Sarah Rayment, Senior Lecturer at Nottingham Trent University, reflects: “The opportunity to explore aspects of academic standards and quality as part of this course has given me a lot to reflect on, and a new perspective on how to approach external examining.”

The only training course for external examiners in the UK, the course explores academic standards and professional judgement, evidence-informed approaches to making impartial and transparent judgements and the role of the external examiner.

Recently, the Advance HE team attended the MENA Higher Education Leadership Forum in Dubai.

At MENA HELF, Advance HE explored the power of adaptive leadership, sharing practical approaches to help leaders respond to complex challenges, build resilience and create thriving institutional cultures.

Fiona Lennoxsmith, Advance HE Interim Deputy Director, Leadership Development, led a workshop at the forum, giving senior leaders from across the region space to test its Framework for Leading in Higher Education against the challenges they face at home.

In our recent news and views, Dr Greg Bremner of Regent College explores the case for universities to facilitate AI use in student coursework while rethinking assessment to ensure it continues to reflect students capabilities.

As AI becomes increasingly embedded in study and the graduate labour market, Greg argues that the question is not whether students will use it, but on what terms and how universities could regulate the process, rather than the output therefore enabling AI to complement rather than replace cognitive effort.

As he concludes, “The universities that move first will define what a credible degree means in the AI era. Those that don’t will discover that employers have already decided for them.”
